These are the full size grabs. I don't see the noise problem but maybe it's me and maybe I should see it video on a monitor. My AF101 arrives Thursday and it's the first thing I will check. If it has unacceptable noise it goes straight back to where it came from.

You do need to see on a monitor connected directly to the camera.

I don't know why he wanted stills from me. They don't show much unless you have comparative frames. I'll get video up tomorrow.

Maybe some AF100's are ok, others not? Mines #107.

I have worked with just about every Panasonic, from DVC30 to Varicam. There is a real problem here.

LightMast, you reported noise, then it's only logical that people ask you for something to look at. So now you know why I asked for stills. Sorry if it confused you.
Also you see it in a monitor connected to the camera directly, but do you also see it in your recordings? And yes please post a video.
Thanks.
PS if you want I can give you ftp access to my server so you can post the video up there.

Are you saying that it is possible to see noise while monitoring from the camera but not while playing back through the camera the same image that has been recorded?

Sorry if I'm a bit confused, but are we discussing one camera or two? Are Iknuhp and LightMast one and the same, or two different people with two different cameras?

To repeat: Where did the camera(s) come from? Have you contacted the seller? Response? Have you contacted Panasonic? Response?

Thanks,

Leo

The camera that I have was purchased from B&H. I have not contacted them or Panasonic.

I plan on posting video, as I have stated in three different posts. I am at a theme park with my family today.

Please refrain from being so accusatory as to say I complaining and asking for proof. I am looking for solutions for myself and others.

As to contacting Panasonic and my dealer- it is NYE weekend. No one is open. I wanted to exhaust the knowledge of those on the forum before going that route.

Again, tests will be up tomorrow.

In the meantime, I would love scene file settings to try besides those referenced in my initial post. They will be noted, slated, and included in the test. I plan on spending all day tomorrow trying to get this dialed in.

I am not the only one seeing this- we can work together to see if there is a solution.

Don't make this personal, fellas. We all know how ugly the discussion can get. And that negative tone isn't something that will fly for very long. Please address each other in a civil and respectful tone.

Forgive me if I am projecting my frustration on to others. I'd love to upload the raw clips to your FTP, that way we can eliminate the compression/vimeo variable.

I've done testing with regards to noise and you can read about it here! and these are the settings I came up with after testing:

Settings:
Film cam
PH 1080/25p
Detail: -7
Gamma: Cinelike V
Matrix: Fluo

Thanks for the information. It sounds like you are finding the same noise that I am, in the shadow areas. You have also confirmed that this noise is present before recording which I have also noted. I will experiment more on Monday.

Are you saying that it is possible to see noise while monitoring from the camera but not while playing back through the camera the same image that has been recorded?

It was merely wishful thinking :-)
It could be possible if you would monitor through SDI and record to SD card, those two pipelines could give different outputs.
But if the SDI output is noisy, yes that's bad.

Sorry for sounding accusatory, I do believe you and take you seriously. I'll send you the FTP details in a second, and I can understand the frustration very well. I hope we'll find a solution.

Happy New Year to all!

Wow this has really become a confusing issue... Not to follow for a lot of readers...

If this helps: (I mentioned before...)

AVCHD is an acquisition codec, not an editing codec, and certainly not a compositing or mastering codec. It is also known as a "consumer" codec. Not to say it is bad. But that roots make that there excist a lot of compatibility possibilities on playback, and much variations and unstable factors that brings it with it..

It is not a Solid format (better say Workflow) to do the tests that I read here... Just make the solid intermediate and go editing with it. You will not have the ugly compression errors which occur as noise. In postproduction we experienced this kind of errors also with other AVCHD camera's, for sure to mention the consumer as well as prosumer models from JVC.

In AVID make it DNXHD, in FCP Prores, and you are up and running at speed with a solid workflow to the finishing. Forget handy players as brilliant AVC player to check your pictures: you will random get the 'noise' that is actually compression error.

Had much and more experiences with this in a few years on different editingsets with this AVCHD and to be honest I'm a little disappointed that there is not a real solid native editingsolution for it with the pro editsuites.

After having a Solid workflow, just look at cameranoise... It would be much much less confusing to make a clear difference between real noise and compression errors that occur as noise.

Just helping.. Have a good time with your beautifull new revolution black boxes!

Ciao!
Sebastian

iknuhp and Lightmast, i don't think there's anything wrong with your af100 in particular but with the sensor in general. Every clip i have seen from this camera has either been showing this weird electronic noise (doesnt look like filmgrain at all) or it looke crushed in the blacks.
It has nothing to do with h264, your monitor or anything else but the sensor. It looks wrong and i hope Panasonic can fix it or they might lose a huge junk of their reputation in just a few hours. This kind of electronic noise is unacceptable these days as small palmcorders produce cleaner images and i wonder how the panasonic broadcast division could produce such a faulty sensor.

I am starting to agree with you.

I noticed in the manual that you can either adjust iso or gain levels, video cam vs film cam mode.. Anyone try -6db of gain instead of 200iso? The gain incrememts seem to be larger so maybe you'll get a lower noise level than at 200 iso?
