AF101 in Singapore

Hi there. This is my first post on this forum. I had a shoot in Singapore recently, and picked up an AF101 a couple of days before I headed out. I took it with my and a few Nikon prime lenses (AIS) - here are some of the results. I am really pleased with most of it. I need to get an external viewfinder as in bright conditions it's a real challenge. I have cut some of this footage in with my main camera (PDW-700) and it looks great. Despite some recent negative comments about the camera, it can produce some lovely pictures. See what you think. Appreciate your comments.

Hey Sparky, I fixed the link so the video is embedded. Lovely stuff. Singapore is awesome, I've been there a few times and it's just an amazing place, but you really brought out the colors and your video looks very good!

Yeah, I agree, this was a nice vid. It showed the strenghts of the cam. You were able to keep control of the highlights nicely. Thats the one thing that I have seen with the cam, It's like hit or miss depending on the operator and conditions. Although thats the norm with most situations but for some reason people are having trouble with this cam more so than others.

Much appreciated, thanks Barry. The light there (in Singapore) is just incredible. I am taking my AF101 out to Hong Kong next week and hope to get some time to grab some more footage. I have found your book really useful Barry, picked it up when I bought the camera - a really useful companion to have. I am not an engineer so can get a little confused about the best settings to use, but whichever settings I used in Singapore turned out very well. Do you have a workhorse/ basic set up in terms of camera settings which you use most of the time - would love to see them. This is a great forum, I am usually on DVINFO, but there seems to be a great deal more conversation here - only joined today! Also picked up rumours on a possible hacked firmware upgrade for the camera which sounds very interesting! Thanks for taking the time to get back to me and well done on a great publication. Sparky,

Thanks. I found shooting with the sun behind fine - but as soon as the camera is looking into the sun (which you can't always avoid) it gets very difficult to expose. The exposure really needs to be spot on to get a nice image - there isn't much room for error. Would you say its worth me purchasing a Cineroid VF? Is it a hassle having it hanging off the camera? Seems like good value.

welcome to the forum sparky. Thought your video was great. I thought you made some very good choices on where to hit your exposure, sometimes a little too bright for my tastes but you got some lovely images.

Do you remember what scene file settings you used?

Thanks PaPa. To be honest, I'm not sure, I'll check in the menu for you. I attached the camera up to a decent HD monitor (LMD 9050 I think) and played with the settings until I found a picture I liked and stuck with them. My main camera is a Sony PDW-700 but I love using this little Af101 so much!

Hi all,

Just thought I'd share this on dvxuser. I was at an assembly centre for one of the non-ruling parties on voting day for Singapore's recent parliamentary elections. The atmosphere there was quite special as it was expected that a non-ruling party would win a group constituency for the first time in Singapore's history (which did happen). I was lucky enough to be there and decided to bring my AF100 along for an impromptu video. A pure run and gun shot, with a Lumix 14-140 and 20 1.7 (14-35/f2 sorely missed as it was in the service centre) and handheld. Was not easily getting exposure and focus perfect run and gun but overall quite pleased with the final result. A true testament for me on how intuitive the layout of the AF100 and how adjustments can be made on the spot fairly quickly for changing conditions.

Here's the video, hope you guys enjoy it.

Very nice stuff. I like your exposure on a lot of the shots too, which as previously stated can be tough. The waveform is my friend!

Thanks Kyle. Yes the waveform is a very good friend. I quite like the exposure bar on the bottom right for quick setups as well esp for live events like this.

Was wondering whether you did manual focus, or left the camera to auto focus? Very nice feeling - could feel the the change of mood from anxiety to jubilation!

Manual focus all the way. Just eyeballing the LCD
so missed the mark on some shots. Very challenging doing this handheld but good
fun!

On hindsight, a follow focus, shoulder mount setup would have been handy but the whole thing was a spur of the moment shoot.
