AF101 bad audio hiss

.....and maybe the audio has a tad of hiss....

Hence the suggestion to use Line Level from mixer to camera. Eliminate the cheaper mic pre amps inthe camera. Line level should be clean as a whistle.

I checked two videos I shot a month ago one with with a lavalier and one with a handheld mic and they sounded great without any hiss so it might be a combination that triggers more hiss than usual?
I used a Sennheiser EW100 G3 system with mic level input and used an AT8010 for the handheld audio.

The Sound Devices Mix Pre 2 looks pretty sweet for the $. I'm kicking myself for selling off my trusty old PSC. That was an awesome mixer.

I go out of our sennheiser receivers at line level ... the pre on the G3 is better than the AF100's pre. You'll hear a difference.

It is dude .. it's great .. it's basically a recording studio pre in a box .. Lundhall transformers and everything.

Well, the hiss from less than stellar pre amps haven't bothered me too much until I used my trusty old Lectrosonics M187/CR 187 combo wireless setup. Wow - it sounded like #@/>.
I experimented with gains on both receiver and transmitter and it was Hiss City unusable. (yes... I installed fresh batts) That setup always sounded pristine on my Betacam. I cannot use it on the AF-100.
Here's hoping the Sound Devices mixer with a line level feed to the AF-100 will do the trick.

I agree on the Lectro front. I went in to the AF100 mic level using a Lectro 411 Rx with a 400a Tx and Sanken COS-11 mic (the cleanest setup around) and it was incredibly hissy. I was able to knock out some of the hiss using Soundtrack Pro, but it was ugly.

I do audio professionally and realize that I can no longer go direct to camera using this setup. By comparison, I tried the same setup on a friend's HPX170 and it was a world of difference. I do think going line level by mixer or direct is a world of difference.

Could you provide a .wav or .aif file from the 170 and then the AF100 using the
same setup? That would be very interesting to measure.

The specifications for both cameras are identical. Notably, the SNR is not specified
by Panasonic, so we'll have to measure this ourselves.

having the same hissing problems recording to Nano Flash thru Panasonic af101 , setting audio at -12db in camera is to high for Nano, anybody have the same problems ?

Just took delivery of the Sound Devices Mix Pre. What a world of difference! Lectro sounds much much better, Sennheiser shotgun and Sony ECM 50 lavs sound clean as a bell. Line input into the camera was a great suggestion. Also, the Sound Devices Mix Pre has a very solid build for such a small device and it's made by hard working Americans behind the Cheese Curtain (Wisconsin).

Figured this would be the place to post this, rather than create a new thread. I have been integrating an AF100 into my existing camera package with little trouble...that is, until I got to the wireless audio part. Of the three wireless mics I own, only one works. I have a Sennheiser EW100 (1st gen). This lav delivers a faint replication of vocals, extremely under modulated, and considerable hiss. A Shure SM58 wireless hand held mic registers nothing and at all. The only one that works is a Shure VP3 wireless lav.

The audio inputs are switched to mic input and 48v phantom power is on. I have set the db level at both -50 and -60 db. I have adjusted the squelch and sensitivity on the transmitters for the mics. From my research here and elsewhere, I'm suspecting that this is an issue of impedance mismatch.

I have used these mics with multiple camera, and never had a single issue. Paid a lot for this camera. I'll be expecting reasonable answers to my problems from Panasonic. I appreciate any response and potential solution to my issues from the peanut gallery.

You wouldn't want phantom power turned on when using a wireless mic receiver. It has its own power supply.

What happens when you use wired mics plugged directly into the AF100? It would be most useful to test with both a dynamic (phantom off) and phantom-powered condenser mic.

Thanks Greg. I have tried with phantom power both on and off, and the Shure VP3 works great with 48v on. I have a Sennheiser shotgun hard-wired that performs flawlessly.
