You might read some of the many lens threads already posted for information.
Question... Do you really want the best fastest lightweight zoom? As in my mind it would run you over $20k, and you did not post one of the most important factors when choosing a lens.... Your budget!
Good Luck!

As David Pointed out, There are many threads addressing this question.
The short answer for handheld documetary shooting is with currently available lenses is
1. Nikon 17-55 f2.8
2. Pentax 16-50 f2.8
3. Tokina 16-50 f2.8
opinions on this will vary some, but if you need constant aperture, relatively fast, and zoomable during a shot, those are your main options
at the present time.

If you have the budget... Duclos 11-16, Angenieux Optimo DP 16-42, Angenieux Optimo 45-120 would be nice fast light lenses which would cover a good range.
