AF100 vs SONY

Hey guys,
I recently received a green light on purchasing a video camera for a production company here in Colorado.
I've done some research and it seems I've come down to the AF100 vs. Sony FS100 and the Sony F3.

I like the AF100 more than the FS100 because of the ergonomics and additional features that the AF100 comes with. However I did read somewhere that the 35m chip in the sony cams are 40% larger than the 4/3 panny chip. Is that true? I'm in a predicament because the company currently owns an HMC150 and they want a step up, but a camera that will cut together nicely.

I know this forum might be a little biased towards the AF100 but if you can give me any new information it would be greatly appreciated...

Thanks again guys,

Ryan

If you need the additional features the AF has that the FS doesn't, get the AF.

If you have the budget and support gear to handle the F3, get the F3.

If you want a super 35mm sensor size and can deal with not having built-in ND filters and HD-SDI, get the FS-100.

The crop factor between the FS100 and the AF100 is about 1.33x. So to get the same field of view with the Sony at 35mm, you'd need a 28mm on the AF100. The DOF difference is about 2/3 of a stop.

I've been spending some time comparing these two and will have an article up shortly (next couple of days). In the absolute shortest summation I can give, the imaging is very comparable between the two in any rational shooting scenario, so I say buy the one that has the features you want.

I have both the AF100 and the F3. The AF100 is a great camera, I have Zeiss ZF lenses for it and some Olympus zooms. I use the camera a lot especially for web based video. Great for hand held shooting. The amount of video you can get on a compact flash card is also a plus, especially for long interview shooting. The files can be a problem in editing depending on the system you are using. Easy with FCP, more work with Avid.

The F3 is a beautiful camera, fantastic picture, great in low-light. I use my Zeiss Compact Primes with the F3, so it isn't really fair to compare the two. But the AF100 hold up pretty well. If money is not the issue I'd say go for the F3. If you want to save some money I'd highly recommend the AF100.

A lot also depends on your budgets. I paid for the AF100 with my very first shoot.

The bookkeepers at the production company may like that the AF100 uses the same batteries as the HMC150... for whatever that's worth.
