AF100 vs HPX250 ?

Hi everybody,

I was all set to purchase a AF-100 after being the owner of a DVX100b for many years, but I recently learned that the HPX250 was just on the horizon.

After reading these forums for a bit, I understand that the AF-100 has a 8 bit 4:2:0 colour space, but with an external recorder, you get get it to be 8 bit, 4:2:2.

The specs on the HPX250 say that it will have a 10 bit 4:2:2 colour space. This seems to be very desirable and what was "missing" from the AF-100.

How much of a leap forward is the HPX250 expected to be in comparison to the AF-100?
Will it have the same features?

Is it expected to address issues that have been written about the AF-100?
From what I've read, it's highlights and low-light (when compared to the FS-100)

I primarily do videography work, but I also do independent creative projects (short films etc) on the side.

Any sort of clarification would be much appreciated.

except for DOF, lowlight and VFR,
250 would probably better

fs100 lolight kicks ass but isnt iso 800 or 1000 enough already?

now on the highlights issue... no news on that yet. expect news when barry gets a prototype. lets hope they've got the message

Don't know why people keep going on and on about highlights. That's something that was solved long ago -- turn down the chroma saturation. FS100 has the same kind of highlight handling that the AF100 has (and by that, I hate even using that term, because what people are calling "highlights" is actually "overexposure"). The more saturated the chroma, the more it'll clip, the more you turn it down, the smoother the rolloff will be.

HPX250 is probably going to have a comparable featureset to the AF100. The codec will be better, definitely. The sharpness will probably be a bit sharper. But it won't have interchangeable lenses or the shallow DOF of an AF100. For events, the HPX250 is probably the much preferable unit. For film work, the AF100 is likely the better unit. But until we get time with one to see what it really is and isn't, that's just speculation.

over exposure. right
i do agree with what barry has said on lowering saturation and etc as that is what i do with my af100
although it wouldnt hurt if there was an option to desaturate the overexposed parts. :)

There is, its called Final Cut.:)

The HPX250 will be my dream camera, at least in this range. I'd love to sell my hmc150 and get one. I wonder how the hpx250 w/ adapter would compare to the af100? I would be inclined to get the former if I had the choice.

Having worked extensively with AVCHD (hmc150) and AVC-intra 100 (hpx 300), I truly love Avc-Intra..... the way it handles colours is gorgeous, and the flexibility of pushing it in post is great too.
