AF100 VBR (slomo) tests and settings test.

I shot this last weekend. I put all settings in the video information. There is NO grading. I wanted to test the noise and banding. I am REALLY happy with the footage, although sadly, I have not figured out how to get the best out of Premiere Pro on this AND the upload the Vimeo. For instance, I see NO banding or black noise in the original footage. If I figure out something better, I will re-upload.

Remember, this is a test, and only a test. There were plenty of things I could have done better :)

Thanks for looking.

Thanks! I wanted a very challenging situation and the sun in this situation was CRAZY bright. The detail in some of the shadowy areas really surprised me. I'm also very happy with the color reproduction although I am thinking of bringing the chroma down one more step. The AF100 just loves saturation :)

As far as Premiere goes, I think I need to start asking others that use it. I normally use FCP, but, I like to just throw quick stuff together in Premiere Pro since it edits natively. The image is SO MUCH better inside Premiere, it's amazing. I wrote out the sequence 5 different ways and they all introduce artifacts. Maybe it's time to start an AF100 specific question on it :)

The Vimeo HD playback on my system is not showing any banding , there is a rainbow cast by the sun in the fine mist. Darks look nicely detailed and clean to me. What kind of monitor are you using? I see just a little bit of pixel blocking in some of the specular highlights, but nothing really objectionable. Near the end I see some macro blocking in the deeper shadows, but I see the same thing on a lot of broadcasts of movies in standard def with fine shadow gradations too. I think that is just an issue with 8 bit digital. The gray scale is not refined enough at the low end of the value range.

I've looked at it on 4 different monitors, comparing the original to the encoded video. In the very beginning I can see macroblocking in the out of focus water on the left for a bit, and then, I see some noise in the dark areas in scenes with the water wheel, that black in there. The problem I have is yes, on a properly calibrated monitor they both look okay, I just don't like that the H.264 out of Premiere is changing the image so much. The original is SO CLEAN. For instance, there is some areas out of focus under the millhouse that are very bright. In the original, there is a TINY bit of noise that causes the gradient between the more orangish color and the yellow to be VERY smooth looking. However, now when I look at it, I see more banding between the colors that was not there before. Definitely the codec adding this.

I am ABSOLUTELY satisfied with the direct AF100 output. In the next couple days I will try some different encoding.
