Hi all, just recently shot a raw off the cuff clip of my friend playing his rhodes. Uploaded it to youtube and would appreciate it if you could give me your feedback on the image quality etc. I know bits and pieces come out of focus but already improving on that, I'm more interested in hearing about noise etc issues as the footage doesn't look as good as in camera raw. It was filmed on one of the af100 book preset recipes, the filmic one. It was shot with the voigtlander 25mm and with the lowest iso setting, no lights just natural lighting. Recorded audio with the sennheiser mkh 50 i think (the cardiod version). I want to learn so give it to me hard what the problems are and how far away I am from achieving decent image quality. Thanks in advance, Taras

Taras;

I think the image looks very good. I want to know what do you mean by Camera Raw??? To my knowledge, the AF100 cannot shoot Raw... Did you use an external device to capture de images?

Hi thanks. No sorry to not be clear. I mean, when i plug the camera into my hd tv and watch it straight from that as its raw mts file it looks a lot better and crisper than when i watch it from a dvd (where it has been converted into mpg4 etc). Watching it from the camera I noticed I probably should have upped the master pedestal as at some bits his beard looks way to dark! (His beard is thick but not that thick lol!)

Noticeable handheld shake/motion, focus hunting, white balance skew, clipping shadows (chin, t-shirt, piano) and some highlights (nose/eyebrow), odd lighting (natural?), almost 1s out-of-sync audio. Also, at 1:51, 1:56-58, 2:19, and 2:48, there is a repeating purple artifact coming from the right side (VFX?). The pimpled recordist and the closing kiss look weird. Some of the above may have been intentional. Sound quality is very nice. Regarding differences in viewing, check transcoding settings and calibration/presets on the TV.

hey yes I noticed the audio shift, not quite sure why it seems fine in premiere! Don't quite get that any ideas? And yeah i had to grade it slightly as it was way to blueish before. Not too worries about the nose eyebrow highlights but how would you avoid the black clipping in camera? Just up the pedestal setting perhaps? (Or obviously better lighting etc out of camera) And thanks for the in depth notes, i think the artifact was some type of lens flare from the sun light, i quite liked it so attempted to catch it once or twice. Not too familiar with transcode settings, should of been the same but ill check. And thanks, im surprised how good it sounded as i recorded it straight into camera and didnt bother to apply any effects or remove any hiss etc which I would always do with my dvx100b. (Not that it was terrible in it but it was definitely not as nice sounding as this). Thanks!

The MKH-50 is a pressure-gradient super-cardioid and a decent one. A great choice for music/voice/studio recording. It seems that you had the mic at a fixed position. Where did you place it? Above the instrument? I have the MKH-8050 (modular) and is very pleased with its natural pick-up.

Yeah it sure is, one of my best buys! My friend (who pops up for a bit) held it steady pointed at the amp which played the rhodes sound. (It was a pretty good amp which helps). And then the two of them fiddled with bass and treble settings untill they were happy.
