Af100 Samurai Mounting Options

Hi there,

Basically I'm a little lost as to how to mount my samurai to my af100 as I am now using my new small hd (on the shoe mount on top of the camera) and the wireless mic/handgrip on the side. When I have the Small HD and the Samurai on shoe mounts on top (via a double shoe mount) it's not very steady. Ideally I'd like something like a mounting plate that i can connect it to the back of the af100, so I can still connect to my manfrotto tripod etc. Otheriwise I've been thinking I may have to delve into the whole rods/rail system world but I'm still unsure on all the parts/what I need for it to be able to connect to the tripod/blackbird. (Please excuse the ignorance!)

I was thinking even though I wouldnt be using any rods could I use the following plate and connect it to my manfrotto tripod with the same holes (ie the tripod and quick release plate, the cheese grate on top, with both the af 100 and samurai mounted on to it) would that work ?

Alternatively I was thinking eitherthe following plate on the top shoe mount of the camera http://www.genus-tech.us/home/top-ch...s100-camcorder

Or the following rod system (but don't know if i need to purchase a second thing to connect it to my tripod?)http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/GENUSTECH-...item257ceaa8ee

Finally the only alternative to all the above I was thinking of cheating and using the following if it would work http://compare.ebay.co.uk/like/3605...ff11=ICEP3.0.0&ff12=67&ff13=80&ff14=63&ff19=0

Any advice would be greately appreciated, panicking a bit as I dont want my small hd and samurai wobbling about a top of my camera!

Thanks

Hey thanks I've seen that but dont quite get it, so what, it's horizontal right and you get both parts there? One connects to the bottom of the camera (tripod screw)? and the other the samurai? Whats the black nob for?

The bracket comes in two parts. One screws onto the side of the AF100 where the handle is mounted, & the second piece connects onto the back of the first via a pair of thumb screws so it's easy removed for storage.

The OEM side handle can be reattached on top of the bracket, or better yet get their wood handle.

The bigger knob's purpose is for mounting a nanoFLASH. I've never worked with a Samurai & don't know how it mounts, but if you contact Westside AV I imagine they'll have a solution.

Any one else, not to be a pest but I'm going mad a little trying to figure this out! :S

Are you still looking for ideas / solutions?

IMHO...It is pretty hard to go past a decent baseplate with rods type of setup. ie a "Production Setup"

The advantages of attaching to a rod system are ...fast, ease of attachment and breakdown, re- configureable, extendable, strong.. etc

Because its industry standard rod/tube ( well 2 standards actually but the smaller is what is suitable in most of our cases).

If gear fits one camera with rods...it will fit other similarly equipped cameras.

There is a ton of stuff ( to buy or rent) that mounts to a std rod system...where as a hybrid system is designed mainly around a unique piece of hardware and less versatile.

A camera needs a rod system for F/Focus, mattebox anyway. Just extend the rods and add brackets.

Hey Shooter really appreciate the post. Yeah you are very right indeed, though due to budget restraints at the moment I don't know if I can afford that system just yet, as while it is future proofing (though I plan on having the af100 for quite a few years at least yet) at the same time I don't know how far I am away from getting a matte box/ focus system as the lenses I own currently are a lumix 14-140, lumix 7-14 and a voigtlander.

Basically in the scenario where I can get the whole system ie:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Genus-Box...474?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3cd0c1729a
and the plate
http://www.videogear.co.uk/Genus/Cheese-Family/Genus-Cheese-Plate/prod_1959.html

(Though from the pictures It looks as iff the rods will get in the way of mounting it). But I can either get that and thats it,

or I can get an Olympus 12mm lens and the samurai mount with shoulder brace from the westside store (they've made me an invoice).

Alternatively I was even thinking would the below act as a real cheap out option, having the camera and samurai mounted like this to the tripod. Anyone tried it?

Need to make a decision soon but umming and urring. If i get the plate I can purchase a new pocket dolly soon too :/

I have my samurai mounted from the shoe with the coollcd 7" articulating arm. Works ok. Cant argue with the price.

Hi Paul thanks for the link. Do you think the follow bundle would be ok (even though it states for dslr) http://www.coollcd.com/coolrigv1-dslr-shoulder-rig-15mm-rod_p996.html

Or else I was thinking of a set up with the following:

http://www.coollcd.com/cool-cheese-plate-v5-multipurpose-mounting-plate_p1094.html (for my Samurai to be mounted on so it stands up at the back of my tripod.

http://www.coollcd.com/tripod-mount...ck_p914:b479eb93bb9de4dad81007c502f6c0a6.html For my af 100 to be mounted

http://www.coollcd.com/tripod-mount...ck_p853:2093777a40a95e6a1ac20a8d92512708.html to attach the set up to my manfrotto tripod hd503

And finally the rods (not sure on length): http://www.coollcd.com/2pcs-black-aluminum-alloy-15mm-rod-20cm-8inch_p1051.html

What setup/parts do you use?

I don't have specific recommendations. They no longer sell the plate I'm using for the AF-100. I don't use an external recorder, but I do use a short articulating arm for a 7" monitor. I'd likely do the same for a recorder.
