AF100 resolution test ( compared to GH2, FS100 and JVC PC-GX1 )

Hi All,

I bought my AF100 couple months ago and really love it. However, I found it cannot give me a sharp image at infinite far scene like my other machine.
Some discussions about the AF100 resolution in the internet mentioned that AF100 have around 800 line resolution. Less than FS100.

I made a simple test yesterday and followings are the screen grabs respectively.
1. AF100+20/1.7
1080/30p
Gamma: HD
Detail level: +1
Vertical Detail: +1
Corning: -3

FS100+18-200 ( 1080/60p, default setting )

GH2+20/1.7 ( Hacked, 1080/24p with 176Mbs AVCHD Intra )

JVC GC-PX1 set to 1080/60p (36MBps)

As you can see the result, My AF100 ( FS100 as well ) seems have a soft image ( and less detail ? ) compared with GH2 and PX1.

I read Barry's book and try to adjust parameters but cannot get similiar feeling like GH2. I am curious that
AF100 have the same sensor with GH2 but with far different result.
Do you think it is normal for AF100? Or I have to bring my machine back to service center?

Sorry for my poor english and amateur question....
Any advices are welcome. Thanks!!

I'm seeing a lot of edge enhancement in that AF100 image, and the JVC as well. Drop the detail level and V detail level a few notches and see if you like the results better.

Yep, I am seeing the edge enhancement on the AF100 as well. As for the 1080p on the FS100, why are you shooting 60p? You are taking twice as many images and expecting the quality to match 30p given the data rate on the FS100 max doesn't go up 200% in 1080p mode. Granted, I would imagine with a tripod shot the data to data frame change should be minimal, but even still, makes more sense to me to shoot at closer settings.

I think what you will find in the AF100 is that it won't be sharper at those settings, but it also wont look so horrible as you are seeing.

My main porpose is to verify the AF100 image quality and yes, my original thinking is exactly the same with you, since the camcoder are all on a tripod
so the frame rate should have no impact on the quality... :embarasse

I personally prefer sharper image when shooting landscape, so I alwayse trying to find a good parameters setting for this target.
Maybe it is the limitation as dcloud mentioned it is due to OLPF. I will try to different Coring and Detail numbers as Noel suggested.

Thanks for all your valuable comments!

Actually I have ever lower the detail numbers ( but not change corning at the same time ), the result seems "too soft" and not sure if this is the limitation of AF100. So
I wish to get some advice here. Thanks!

Heres thr thing, the extra detail sharpness you get from the gh2 may be false details. I can atleast asure you the softness doesnt mean it doesnt have resolved details...
