AF100 Remote Control

I was just wondering if zoom function on the remote control has any use. I tried using it with MFT Lumix 14-140 but it does not seem to work. I am trying to take a crane shot so would need to adjust the zoom. Can the remote be used for that purpose? I am just starting out with AF100 so trying to clear my basics.

The answer is yes and no. But a little background first -- the remote that comes in the AF100 box is the same as is included with many of their other cameras, and those other cameras have powered zoom lenses, and so the zoom function works with those other cameras.

Now, to the AF100: it depends on the lens. Some lenses have motorized zooms, but the vast majority don't. Your 14-140 doesn't, for example. The only two that I know of that do, are Lumix X lenses, the Lumix G X Vario PZ 14-42 and 45-175 lenses. Those lenses have rocker switches on them for powered zoom, and will also work through the AF100 for use with a remote control (wired or wireless) that has a power zoom. Er, I think -- I must admit I don't think I've heard of anyone trying them with the wireless remote control, but I can't imagine why they wouldn't work; I know I've heard of people using them with the wired remote.

So -- if you have a powered zoom lens, then yes it should work. But there are only two lenses on the planet that I know of that would work with it, the rest don't have the motor in them and therefore can't work.

Barry, Thank you so much for such a great explanation. I do not remember if this was mentioned in The AF100 Book that you wrote. If it is, then probably I should take some time to read the book once again.

Power zoom lenses didn't exist when the book was written, so -- no, you didn't miss it; this is stuff we had to learn together when the new power zoom lenses were introduced.
