AF100 Questions: What monitor to go with? Looking for 2.8 zoom to start w/.

Hey guys,

Realize there are a few posts about this already but was thinking of picking up a Small HD monitor to go back and forth between my incoming af100 and my 60D. Any reason to choose another monitor? I like the Marshall as well but now that Small DP has false color am thinking I should just go w/that. I like the size and res.

Also, frustrated that Canon EOS lenses are not working efficiently w/this camera. Not impressed by any of the sub $1500 Panny or Olympus lenses that I'm seeing. Would ideally like the lens I purchase to be usable on my 60D as well. Love my 2.8 17-50 Tamron VC now. Looking for something similar for the af100. Any suggestions? Nikon maybe?

Well, as for monitors, SmallHD makes several, the DP6 is I presume the one you're talking about? If so, you may also want to consider the TV Logic version, same basic panel but a different feature set, you may find that you prefer one over the other.

As for lenses -- about a month from now the Birger adapter is supposed to come out, which would allow total proper use of Canon lenses on the AF100, and -- if you can afford it, would seem to be the ideal solution for you wanting to use your Canon lenses on both. It just depends on whether you can limp along until then, and also whether there will be any further delays in it coming out -- it's always risky to bank on an unreleased product. Fully-manual Nikon lenses and fully-manual Canon lenses can work on both without any issues, but electronic-control Nikon or Canon lenses won't -- at least, not until the Birger adapter is released.

I'd stick with lenses that focus in the same direction that your used to. I can't wrap my head around any lens that focus the opposite direction of cine lenses unless I'm using a follow focus with a reversing gear.

I'd recommend Canon's 24-70mm as it's pretty when wide-open, & parfocal, but it will focus in the opposite direction of your Tamron.

One thing that really bugs me about the Lumix lenses is they zoom in the opposite direction of my other lenses (& cine zooms). Even though I rarely zoom while shooting, I hate it when I'm moving fast, & zoom the wrong direction. Especially with clients monitoring.

But that's me.

Best,
Bern

If you like the Small HD form factor and resolution, check out the TV Logic WFM-056WP as well. Same panel, false color, scopes, markers, zoom, embedded audio and TC displays, and for DSLR's, besides special DSLR scaling modes, it has an HDMI to HD-SDI converted output in case you want to feed a client monitor. Film Tools and Vidkey have a special DVX User forum group price of $1350, regularly $1595.

Right now smallhd only has the dp6, they cancelled their previous larger display. The dp6 firmware update process is DIY where the tvlogic is send it in. Also, any old and current nikon lens can be used with an adapter with aperture control, whereas the canon lenses require electronics to change the iris. Nikon is the king of compatibility.

Thanks for the feedback guys. This forum really rocks!

Decided to go w/Small DP w/Canon batt mount so I can throw on a few extra LP6s. TV Logic also looks good but w/all the accessories and the 10% DVXuser discount, I decided to go w/the slightly cheaper package. Am seriously considering forgoing a zoom and just picking up a cheap Rainbow Imaging adapter and a few older Nikon Manual Primes for the AF100.

You will love that monitor. I use a nikon 17-35 2.8 that I had modded at Duclos lenses as my standard zoom. I use the MTF adapter in the event I come across a Nikon G lens.

Is this your 17-35? http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/186250-GREY/Nikon_1960_AF_S_Zoom_Nikkor_17_35mm.html

It looks like it has ap control on the lens itself. Is that the case? If so, I'm very interested in purchasing this to go along w/a 50mm 1.2 & maybe a 105 micro as starter lenses.

If you truly love your "2.8 17-50 Tamron VC" then hold off on picking up a 17-35/2.8 Nikkor.

In the short term pickup a Kippon adapter with aperture ring, & wait to see what the Birger smart adapter offers. Image Stabilization, distance readout, & wireless follow focus, are very powerful features I'd use regularly.

Well, I love the 17-50 b/c for the price, it's image and flexibility are fantastic on my 60D. It's my primary lens for that camera and I would likely be using it for bcam while needing a lens on the AF100 simultaneously. I like the idea of the Birger smart adapter but $700 is a lot of money. Plus, I can't wait for that to come out. I have a shoot in the next two weeks and cam/lenses need to be purchased on Monday for my client.

yes that's the lens and it does have an aperture ring. I also have the 28-70 2.8 which has an aperture ring and the 80-200 2.8. I have three Zeiss ZF - 28 2.0, 50 and 100 makro 2.0. I feel covered in about any situation - although the new zeiss 35 1.4 looks promising for an interview lens. I have the canon 50 1.2 I use on my 5D and it is a remarkable lens.

Gaffney Film, thanks this all all super helpful. Sounds like you have some nice lenses there. I may try to pick up that 17-35 and the Nikon manual focus 50mm 1.2 to start w/.
