AF100 on AFL's Tampa Bay Storm Gameday Open

It's been about 3 months since I first got the AF100 in my possession. Initially it took me about a week to really feel like I had a handle on the image- once I had the scene file I like all squared away I've been able to just shoot the camera, and enjoy the package. The more I've had the camera out in the field, the more I like it.

When we had this shoot come up on the horizon we were initially thinking 5D, but it soon became clear this would be perfect for the AF100. The workflow and features just worked out perfectly for this shoot (with all the overcranking and long lenses).

The AF100 system has turned out to be a real workhorse for me- It's seen a lot of use in a bunch of different situations and has performed flawlessly thus far- the only screw ups have been of my own doing ;)

We'll continue to use the camera because it works and we can trust it. We'll let the content do the rest.

Nice! Rain, Dancers and Pyro!!!

Were those Canon EFs? If so, how'd you control iris?

And the everpresent question- what settings?

Great project, where will this play?

Very nice but it's tough to tell how things look on that Vimeo embed. The rain really messed with the compression, but I can tell everything was lit and shot well. I bet it looks great RAW. How did it hold up in the default file format or did you shoot onto an external recorder? External would've been ideal for something like this given all the droplets the compressor needed to work on but I'm sure it ended up OK if you used the on-board. Any chance of some full-res grabs or at the very least a shot of your AF100 setup together?

Thanks in advance, great job. :)

Hello all.

I produced and directed this project with Kevin. The vimeo embed does it no justice at all. It's hot in full HD.

Here are some of the questions I can answer:

1. The video is being used as the open for the players taking the field and in some regional commercial spots.
2. Kevin will have to jump in with camera settings.
3. We didn't record out of camera. All within. We considered using the nanoflash but for simplicity went camera only.
4. There should be some photos in the BTS slide show on the page showing off the rig. But I'm sure we can post more.

We brought in a really strong crew for this shoot and it really paid off.

Okay, I'm going to see if I can rattle this off by memory

Cine-V
Norm 2
Coring +3
Det -3
V Det -3
Master Ped -2
Chroma -2 (? not sure about this one)

There was a mild grade done in Colorista II as well, since the footage coming off the card in that setup is really neutral and easy to work with. I know some guys really like bottoming out the sharpness, but -3 works good for me, and that tolerates just a touch of sharpening in post if you need it. I feel like the -6 a lot of guys were going with is just too soft- -3 really doesnt add much noise that I can notice in Norm 2 or Fluoro.

My first shoot with this camera I used a KiPro, but to be honest I havent used an external recorder since. The codec has held up well, and keys are pulling fine- just light them right and it's all good. If it was a lot of movement on a green screen I'd probably use an external recorder, but for head and shoulders/interview work I've found the codec being fine for keying. I took the camera out for some tests the first night I had it shooting hockey, and after seeing those results I knew the codec was fine. Sure you can pixel peep for hours and find issues in any codec, but our results have been great.

As far as the rain, there were only a few frames here and there where the codec had trouble, and it was just the rain drop dragging some jersey color with it. They literally only lasted 2 or 3 frames at most, and I only saw that maybe 3 times during the whole edit.

Did I mention Colorista II? I did? Let me mention it again. Colorista II. I use it constantly now. Easy, accurate, and powerful. And fast renders!

Looks great. Agree with the sharpness note!

Unfortunate you managed to break the vimeo codec : ) would love to see a mov with a high bitrate. I can't imagine a worse situation for a codec

My first experiments in Squeeze for this made me consider beating my head against a wall.....definitely a challenging encode for web streaming.
