AF100 on a Remote Helicopter - First Test

After getting our AF100 a few days back we have been itching to put it on the chopper and take it for a flight. This was the first day the weather was even close to good enough so I did a quick flight at a local marina.

I am loving this camera! The ability to shoot at a full 1080p and overcrank is a game changer for us...so nice not to have to choose either resolution or frame rate

I am still very new to the camera and learning a lot, I really like how the top handle and side grip are removable, every pound counts on the helicopter.

This was all at 1080 24/60P with a few shots of the camera in the gimbal thrown in from a GoPro

Best,

Tabb

That is sooo amazing!! Dude!! I need to get you out here to shoot some crazy weddings with me. Seriously..

The footage looks amazing.. What lens did you have on there? Also, what's Gimbal is that you guys are using.

Great job!! PM me if you are interested in doing weddings in Cali!

Thanks!

Looks great! Your helicopter must be huge to fly that camera.

Sent you a pm

Are you kidding me?? This looks absolutely incredible. I too would like to know what lens you used. Incredible.

Thanks everyone...glad you enjoyed the clips. I used the Lumix 7-14 lens (which I am really impressed with btw) it was making some beautiful flare earlier in the day. The chopper is cusom made but we are using a camera gimbal from copterworks.com. I will try and find a couple clips of the chopper flying for those who are interested.

unbelievably amazing. If people dont think they can make a great work of cinema with the af100 just watch this. Im tired of people complaining about DR, crop factors, etc. Film is so much more than the sum of the technological parts inside the camera. Use the tools that you have and you can do great work. Awesome! I love slow motion, and camera movement. The music could change and you would get a totally different feeling from the images. That just means that the images themselves are great and they can be used by talented people to tell good stories. Keep posting more stuff..

Aerialpan, good stuff. Id use your services if I were close to you. Clearly you take the time to have your gear working optimally before you shoot.

the overcast conditions definitely allowed af100 to closely replicate 35mm filmic look on this one. if you had told me it was 35mm at some points i would probably believe you

Tabb, dude, I am soooo jealous! This one video wraps up so many of my passions - sailing, AF101's, aerial photography, slo-mo, the Lumix 7-14, beautiful images... on and on

I'd love to see that heli you were using, presumably it's gas powered not electric, I've struggled to find any electric one that can lift more than half a kilo or so. What permissions did you need to make a flight like that? Were the boat owners nervous or did you just do it early enough that they didn't notice? LOL Kudos on your flying skills though, really impressive.

I'm in early talks with a guy over here about a job which would involve some aerial work over water but hadn't considered being able to get an AF101 up there - was looking at using my panny HD 750 consumer camcorder.

But the combination of slow motion and that 7-14 is breathtaking.

Consider me inspired :) and if you don't post some pics of that rig you're gonna be deluged in PM's :)

Cheers

Neil

The flying and footage is very impressive I as well would love to see the rig and perhaps even suggestions on putting together similar rigs.

I think I'll stay tuned to this thread...

Shots looked beautiful, but equally impressed with the skill of the pilot. Really nice, thanks.

Fantastic! You're an amazing pilot, having that complete freedom of movement is ridiculous. That gyro is doing it's job though, incredible!

Great camera + great pilot = fantastic footage.

Thanks for sharing!

hdmi signal

hdmi signal

Hi,

we are just working on a quite similar heli for using a gh2.

To control the gimbal and the helicopter did you use the hdmi signal?

How do you transfer video signals to the remote monitor? from what we have dicovered now its only possible to use analog video signals via radio. Therefor we thought of using digital/analog converter...which will be additional weight.
Any better/ other suggestions?

Thanks and best regards

Wow. Color me impressed. Your flying skills were great and I agree, couldn't believe you went between the masts! Hat's off to you! I too would love to see what the helicopter setup looks like. I don't think I'd be brave enough to fly my AF100 over the water! :) In any case, thanks for sharing.
