AF100, Hot Rod PL and Heavy glass

Just a FYI if you're on the fence about a PL adapter...
After getting our AF100, I was a bit concerned about using any substantual glass on it. As most of you know, this isn't a beefy camera (weight wise) and even the lightest PL lens will weigh 2 - 3X that of the camera body itself. That's the main reason we decided to use the Hot Rod system because of their mount support. Our adapter just came in and I've got to say, it's extremely well engineered and machined. It's right on par with the build quality of Zacuto gear. It gives you a little more confidence when putting a $40k Optimo on a $5k camera. Over the next week or so we'll be running all sorts of PL lens's on it for some broadcast TV projects. I'll post the footage if anyone is interested.

Joe,

You probably don't want to hang more than 7lbs. off of that AF100 Tuner Kit. My guess is that your Schneider prime(they are HEAVY), matte box and follow focus is exceeding that limit. I had to buy an Arri Dove Tail and Element Technica Base Plate that offers a second set of rod supports for heavy lenses, an expensive proposition in conjunction with the Tuner Kit.

Yep! Would like to see the Results. I have had hands-on AF100 with same 25mm lens in the Broadcast India Exhibition 2010. And still waitin' to see the Results with these lenses.

Well, I am not truly familiar with Cine Primes, but that's what bugged me in Exhibition when I saw the AF100 for first time, and these big Schneider primes (25mm, 75mm) were hung to it without any kind of base support. People were tilting it up & down, and the Japanese Representative wasn't even aware of what would happen.

Looks like the 25mm Cine Xenar is 5.1 lbs, so should be perfect with the AF100 Tuner Kit. No way I'd use any Cine prime without supporting the PL-MFT adapter.

Has anyone tested the Zeiss CP Primes vs. The Schneider Primes. Century Schneider has had an excellent reputation for having good glass but have just recently brought out these new lenses. Are they a more cost effective alternative???

Thanks for the input Jeff. The issue with the Cine Xenars is they have external focus and rack about 1/4 - 1/2" to prevent breathing. So really, there's no other way to add support unless there's a support out there to allow the lens barrel to "slide" on it.?.?

Joe, all lenses crop the same. 25mm Zeiss = 25mm Xenar

The only issue you run into is glass developed for smaller sensors put onto bigger sensor cameras.

Hi Logan,
I tried to edit my post but somehow deleted it. Anyway, I was under the impression that a FF lens has a 2x crop but academy has a 1.2 crop on a non FF sensor. Not to get back into a discussion about crop factors.

Lenses don't have crop factors. Sensors do.

Any 25mm lens from any format will look exactly the same, on any given sensor. (assuming the circle of illumination is big enough).

It is the sensor that crops the image, not the lens.
