AF100 dropouts

I'm a bit surprised by this...first time I've seen so many dropouts on my AF100 within one recording card. Once in a blue moon there might be one on my HMC150 or AF100, but very rarely. Using Transcend class 6 16GB cards. Any ideas? Here's 3 stills within 20 seconds or so, and they all appear around the eye area near the glasses. I will try to find the particular card I used and mark it, just wondering if there's another possibility other than a faulty card. Wish I could clean the heads to be sure!

Do you still have the original card? Try watching it in camera to see if it appears there. Or re-transfer the card. I've seen this happen from transferring to fcp on a laptop, and it was the laptop's fault and was not on the original card.

Those are artifacts and apart from those...the images are really soft .

Are these "thumbnails" or are they "frame grabs" from an NLE?

They are only 30kb-ish and I would expect a frame grab to be considerably higher than that (to have any value as a reference)

Yes they are just frame grabs and they change wildly from FCP through quicktime, but the artifacts are my concern. Good suggestion on the re-transfer, never thought of that as the cause of the issue, will try to locate the card. I guess I should now label my cards to pinpoint issues like this...

They still look like thumbnails to me. eg thumbnails that the camera uses to locate a playback clip.

If they are frame grabs... they are seriously soft and degraded images and the problems are more than just occasional artifacts.

the footage is actually fine, the artifacts are my issue. it bothers me that they look like tape dropouts. tape is so old now...

Confused now...

What are you concerned about if the footage is fine?

They are not "drop outs". They are artifacts.

Are they in the actual footage or not? ( and I doubt they are - see a similar current post )

I've had this happen before on my laptop. I retranscoded the files to prores and the artifacting went away... I've found that it sometimes happens when I'm transcoding a lot of footage on my laptop and it's working hard. I haven't had this issue with footage straight out of the camera.

id recommend transcoding with 5dtorgb @1.8gamma. it flattens the footage to sweet quality

Looks like corrupted frames. It's like dropping frames on a Red, likely due to a write error to the card. It could be a bad card or the card isn't fast enough. Do you have a different brand card you can try, like a Sandisk Class 6 or Class 10? FWIW, I have NEVER had this happen with my AF100, GH1, or GH2.

The problem is indeed the log and transfer step of FCP, went back to an image of the card on the hard drive and transferred the clips again and no artifacts, or dropouts. very strange. 5DtoRGB looks like great tool, will give it a go, thanks!

To reiterate what others are saying, this is definitely not a problem with your card. There is something wrong with your transcode process.

-Update your drivers/patch up FCP.
-Download VLC media player and view the original MTS files
-Install a trial of Premiere Pro and import the MTS files natively...

I bet your problem will no longer be there.

The transcode issue has been known for awhile.

Were you using a MacBook Pro?

5dtorgb will make your footages look sweet and flat! Dont use log and transfer or native cs5.5 as its much contrastier

I've had other transcode issues this year with FCP on my MAcPro5,1 so it's good to see alternative ways of getting my AVCHD files in
