AF100 body strenght

Hi All

Can the AF100 suport its own weight via the lens mount, I intend to put a big lens on via adapter and have the lens mounted on the tripod.
The camera is as "out of the box" no extras bolted on

thanks

My guess would be no. I think the lens mounts would not be strong enough to support the body (although it is pretty light). Maybe if the built in mount was used, but for instance my 4/3 to m4/3 mount feels a little weak. Works fine, but I wouldn't support the camera with it.

I don't think I would do that with any camera as the lens mount is not really designed to take the full weight of the camera body hanging off it, adding an adaptor will make things worse and to be safe I would have the camera and the lens supported on a decent rail system.

Better to be safe than sorry as accidents happen and you may end up with a broken camera and lens!

I had to try 1.5kg lenses this morning and you definitely need a support. The mount flexes in a worrying way without one. It can't take more than 1kg.

I think the exception is DSLRs. I often mount my 7D to a tripod with the 70-200 tripod collar, so in that case the lens is supporting the camera body. But it's smaller and lighter and the mount itself seems quite secure.

Yeah, I'm with Gary and editman, don't do it. Get some rails underneath it. It wasn't designed to be suspended from the mount.

As Benajim says, I've also done that with the GH2, it's so light it's possible, but -- the AF100 is bigger, and the mount is rated for 1kg, and the AF100 weighs more than that. Overall, not a good idea.

Generally, I've found the medium zoom lenses like nikon and canon 24-70 are fine with no support, 17-35 fine with no support, 14-24 fine with no support, olympus 14-35 fine with no support, but anything bigger and or heavier than those lenses should have support. Even if its a physically long lens should probably have support because it will apply more torque to the mount than a physically shorter but heavier lens.

This should be specified by the manufacturer. How is one to know if they are using the camera or abusing the camera? One shouldn't have to guess or be forced to play it safe by putting a support under the lens, when it isn't necessary.
