AF100 BLACK AND WHITE 'Actor's Acting'

We were hired to film an 'acting for the camera class' at our alma mater and this is a montage of the first group of students work. They were using the '14 Actors Acting' video collection the New York Times Online did a little while ago as their inspiration. Each individual scene is about 1 and a half minutes. There are no cuts in there individual performance and everything was done with pans dollies focus shifts, etc.

Here is an example of Day 1's group in montage form. It was a great opportunity to test the black and white capabilities of the camera. This Vimeo version of the video doesn't display how well I feel the camera does in Black and White mode. It was very nice to see it have the nice roll off from light to dark. Lighting was a basic 3 way kit that the school provided. A little diffusion and some reflectors as well. Some shots only one light used. Comments/questions welcome!!!

Shot all on zeiss zf.2 35mm and 50mm lens. Interesting to note that we tried the 14-140 first to see what it would look like. There was definitely a different 'feel' to the lens in the images. The zeiss' just had a filmic rolloff between light and dark and superior detail to them, while the 14-140 was crisper (edgier), or more 'video-ish'. Didn't look terrible, but I guess zeiss lenses are expensive for a reason!

Very nice (and I accidentally watched it muted, which I think made it even more visually striking).
I did notice the face of the actress sitting in front of the mirror (1:55) seems a bit hot on the left side of her face and ear.
But it looked pretty darn good on Vimeo here.

But man, don't ya just love lighting for B&W?
Love the overcranking, too.

Thanks, for the comment. Yeah it is slightly hot on that side. I'll take it down a little. Towards the end of the shoot I flipped over to color mode and was like wow, it really just doesnt look anywhere near as striking. Yeah we overcranked at 48fps the entire shoot. Gave it some gravity.
