AF100: Best Monitor Good Price?

Holy mackerel, I just googled it. $1300!!! But it's not even 6"!
How is something that small able to show the resolution from the AF?
How about color rendition? Accurate or does it need calibration?

I guess - how does it handle 1080/24p?
I looked at the bigger one and all it mentions is 720p.

I'm looking at getting a 32" 1080 HDTV and calibrating with a spyder. When I can power it I like having a big monitor... Now just to decide which one.

Anyone here used a spyder to calibrate a monitor?

The DP6 is 720p and I use the 1:1 mode on the DP6 for focusing. With the latest patch I think the color rendition is pretty good to my eyes. However, I should caveat that with once I have my white balance set to what I want, I use the waveform monitor to judge exposure and personally don't spend a lot of time looking at the colors, only the luminance myself. I shoot fast, so I want a rig I can move around easily. I mount the DP6 to the AF100 and then move my AF100 between handheld, tripod, or shoulder rig. It's light so it's never a problem.

It also handles 24p that I sent it. But again, it downscales to 720p. I think 1080p is overkill for the AF100 in monitoring anyways because the true resolution of the AF100 is not that high. If I were buying again, I'd buy in a heartbeat!

Here's what I'm thinking. Maybe hold off and get the Samurai when it comes out. Retail is $1400 or thereabouts. 5" monitor 800x400 lines. I only really need it for focusing. What do you think? I'm thinking I'm in the market for a monitor right now and a recorder at some point. Why not wait and kill two birds with one stone? Just a thought.

Not a bad idea, some people are thinking of doing that. I am not sure if I want to go Atmos or Sound Devices at this point. Might want to look at the new Sound Devices recorders as well.

The pix240 price is prohibitive for me at $2500 especially if the Samurai turns out to be as good as announced at $1000 less.
Have you heard of any ninja feedback?

There is some here on the site. Most of it very positive. A few kinks they are working out and some additional features are coming. When I am ready to buy, I am going to be very thorough going through both of them and see what I want. For me, I don't mind using HDMI, so I do not need SDI, but still, lots of decisions!

I hear you on the SDI but here's a thought. A lot of folk are talking about untethered video village via the cube teradek. http://cube.teradek.com/ You can have a wireless video village to a laptop or an ipad or stream live. If I'm correct, it uses SDI. So yes, you're right. A lot of decisions.

edit: I think it does both HDMI and SDI but it'll be good to have options should you have another device occupying one port on the AF.

edited ... the Cube supports an Ad Hoc network . which eliminates the need for a router.

Interesting idea..

I use the marshall 5''
The better news it that it uses AA batteries, so its cheap. My only complaint is that is eats up those AA batteries like crazy. It uses 4 AA at once, and I'll go through 3 sets if I'm being conservative on set.

It's cheap, but sometimes I wonder if those AA will add up.

Use rechargeable AA's. We've been using them for years for our microphones.

I've been very happy with my TVLogic 5.6 since I got it. It runs on AA's as well but I need to get another adapter since they run out a bit TOO fast for my taste. The monitor is excellent and provides a wealth of features. One of the reasons I chose it over the DP6 is the ability to display black bars on the monitor with variable opacity. That alone made it worth the price. It does have other features that made it worth it of course but being able to set black bars is amazing since I'm used to gaff tape on my monitors. White lines from cameras don't help me frame as well, it's difficult for me.

I think you'd be happy with either option or even the marshall, but it doesn't have the features the DP6 or TV Logic have.

I use the DP6 batteries and use 3 a day, as I shut off the monitor when not in use. Longest day I did was 17 hours I believe with the DP6 with pretty heavy coverage. I was impressed.

I don't shoot to a video village. In the one time I was on a set that had a director who had his own display, I was on B cam and A cam was using a prototype HDMI wireless system to the directors monitor (that was also battery powered). If I need that, I'd probably look at that system as it was small and worked pretty well.

Since I also want to Oktocopter in the future, HDMI transmit is a future concern anyways for me :)
