[AF] Nikon 1 Canon 0

Yeah but does it line-skip? It's heavier and pricier too. I didn't think Canon would catch up in high ISO but it looks like I was wrong. The chroma noise isn't a problem anymore either it appears. Looking forward to the DXOmark sensor tests to see how close they are. I've always liked Nikons since I had an FM2 20 years ago but you know I'm brand agnostic.
No idea on line skipping. New Canon's IQ is effectively promising. D800 looks like to also compete with, as far as sharpness concerns.

I am somewhat considering the D800 over others, because I shoot documentary mainly, and I would like to do impromptu hi-res portraits, potentially. Up to 6400 (haven't seen many samples beyond that) are looking good considering. I just don't know if I want to continue shooting projects without timecode.
Well, you can add the timecode later at post.

Not so helpful with multi cam or dual system shooting, but I do appreciate your offer of suggestion.
You won't have other chance if the device doesn't offer anyway. But I agree with you. Dual audio recording will be harder to get it fine. And multicam even worst. In this case, you'll have to keep with Canon. Or get the solution via the HDMI recorder, I guess.

I have the same problem with 3D where not even timecode is enough. External recorder impossible to help AFAIK.

Yes, those sound like the only options for now. I would love to talk to you about 3D sometime.

As you wish. But I know nothing or too little. We only have someone who dedicates his entire life to the field. We share him with one of the branches of Sony Europe to whom he's doing 3D consulting in any case. But if I'll be able to help, it will be a pleasure when you wish.

Very cool, I will PM you sometime soon about that. Thank you very much!

Clean HDMI out of the 5DMK3?
Unfortunately not. It was a typo. Other post of mine posted below says it clearly. Fixed now in any case. Sorry for the fast typing.

EDIT -- No, not even a typo. Now you dumbfounded myself with my own posting : D I meant because there is HDMI output on Nikons, AF is still provided going with an external recorder once you'll be using live view. Reason enough, this AF cripple from Canon is not nice to see. As much as to have not clean HDMI output either. They play dirty. We pay the products after all !

I think if people want autofocus, they should invest in an ENG style video camera. Using SLR for video is more closely related to 35mm/16mm/8mm film cameras - prime-lenses and manual focus.

As I have stated before, it will be a big embarrassment to Nikon if the 5DMK3's ALL-I codec outperforms the D800's uncompressed HDMI - especially in regards to resolution and dynamic-range.

And to be honest, all I am interested in, and all I've ever been interested in, is dynamic-range - I would shoot SD if there were an SD camera that gave me more dynamic-range than what is currently on the market. I hope the dynamic-range of the 5DMK3 is around 12-stops. I think the 5DMK3's ALL-I 90mbit codec, coupled with the Technicolor picture-profile, should yield some interesting results.

From viewing the D800 video "Joy Ride", which I personally thought was amazing, the only technological advancement I could gather was that rolling-shutter had been virtually eliminated. The dynamic-range and resolution looked like current 5DMK2 footage - however, this could be due to the colour-grading that they chose, the D800's internal-codec compression, and Vimeo's compression.

Ultimately, I would rather a good internal codec as opposed to a mediocre uncompressed HDMI alternative. Interesting times ahead. I think, however, it would be wise to hold off purchases until NAB in April - if the 4K DSLR is still 12-18months off, I think the 5DMK3, assuming it outperforms the D800, is a sensible purchase.

This is what I'd like to see on Canon side. It will be enabled on still photography mode, but disabled with motion. Clean HDMI output follows. Not on Nikon though. Available on Live View Shooting Mode. Therefore, during the HD video recording as well, where Nikon offers clean HDMI output.

If Canon wouldn't figure how to get a way to cripple their camera in order to protect their high-end video (now also known as cinema division only because 5DII sold thousands of units in hands of moviemakers), this would be available in the package the customers as myself, that is, we pay. A perfect shame.
