Otis,

You should really take a look at the PCAM calculator, it is more accurate than anything you are posting here.
http://www.davideubank.com/Good_Focus/pCAM_for_iPhone.html

Laws of physics cannot be denied and the reality is that there is no way that you would be able to gain the same DoF on a 1/2" or a 2/3" chip set in comparison to 4/3" regardless of aperture.

Best regards,

Jan
Jan, with all due respect laws of physics can't be denied, but it looks like you skipped some classes in the past, as the second part of your sentence is simply not true.

I simply stated a fact, that the superzoom will not provide seriously shallow DOF. I never discussed lens quality on EX1 or anything else. I just put some information on the table, which is proven, easy to verify, covered by theory and practice. You don't have to question my credibility, my sources and my calculations or put me against 600 experts:) One should plan on purchasing some primes with the new camera in order to get dSLR DOF and good low light. That's all. Panasonic want to sell lenses, right?

Again...see super shallow DOF shot at f/8 with said super zoom. You can throw around all the calculations you want but I've been using the lens for nearly a year now and I can tell you that it can get DOF that is perceivably very shallow....and what I mean by perceivably is that you can work with it...close subject, far background, etc...the same way you would with a 1/3" or 2/3" camera.

Anyway if you want to use a superzoom for everything go buy an EX3. Since we're now able to use interchangeable lenses we might as well actually use them! I am sure you can buy something plenty fast to cover the 14-80mm range, and then you can buy an 80-200mm f/2.8 or something comparable to cover the rest. Carry two lenses in your bag. The end.

All arguments about math aside what is your point?

How about we stop attacking the industry rep with years of experience and the good will to be such an excellent resource for all of us here on DVXuser. All things being the same except the size of the chip, the 4/3 sensor will have shallower depth of field. End of. You can get a faster lens if you need it, let's keep in mind that the micro 4/3 system can adapt pretty much any lens to it. For those of you just saying that we should keep in mind some of the limitations of the GH1 kit zoom-great, we get it. Can we get back on topic now?

Hi Robert,

Ha ha, I would stand in my lab and prove this to you. With the same comparable lens, you will not get similar Depth of Field. I invite you to NJ anytime. Myself and my entire engineering group will show this to you. Sure if I get a really long lens and put that on the 1/2" camera and then put a 50mm equivalent on the 4/3"S you might get close, but that isn't what I am talking about. Could I do it with a 35mm adapter, yes, but not with two lenses matched for similar field of view. Sorry my math not my physics is off on this one.

Best regards,

Wow... all I did was ask that if there is a kit lens available or included, that it behave like a video lens

That's what I thought you asked.

This cam is so many months out.

Jan C. is the product manager, and has access to testing, information, etc. I would imagine.

No doubt we will see features and capabilities fleshed out over the months.

But isn't some of this back and forth unnecessary at this state, and certainly off topic?

This camera will have the same DSLR DoF as the GH1 but it will be different in that it is optimized for recording a video signal.

Actually we are not in the lens business. But there are a vast number of lenses out there. That is the point of this camera. You can adapt a very wide variety of 35mm lenses to it as well as Nikons and the rest. I know I have a f 2.8 35mm that will put me right in the sweet spot. Or I have a f4.5 zoom that is a little lesser quality.

Point is it doesn't have to be a prime, it can be any lens. Of course it goes without saying that the better the lens the better the picture.

Best,

Jan

Okay, enough with the DOF talk, we will attempt again to get this back on track.

As for kit lens, I believe Jan has said that it's to be sold with no kit lens, it's a body-only at this time. And the most video-appropriate zoom lens out there for the m4/3 lens mount is the GH1's stock 14-140. It provides video-style autofocus, and chromatic aberration compensation and barrel distortion compensation. Only thing it's really missing, for video work, is the video-style zoom capability.

Requests have been made for a windowed sensor mode, which might allow using c-mount TV lenses or 2/3" bayonet lenses. We'll see if that happens.

Hi Mike,

Didn't get that far back in the thread to your question. That was sort of my suggestion to David, that maybe we close this thread and just start an area for the AF100. Anyhow, I am assuming you mean like a Fujinon or Canon Zoom or something like that and right now, that looks like it might be a little tough right out of the box, as those lenses draw power from the camera for the zoom motor. There isn't enough power available on the camera to do that. I have engaged in a conversation with a 3rd Party manufacturer that is interesting in coming up with a solution. That will be easier to say sometime in October/November.

Hope that helps,

Jan

Hi Jan,

Since I have no experience with SLR type lenses, my question was that if you (or most likely Lieca) either made available or included a kit zoom lens like the GH1's, that it include the ability to zoom in, get focus, and keep focus when you zoom back out... like most video lenses behave, since a friend informed me most SLR's don't do that. Barry since called it a parifocal lens, vs a varifocal. Obviously, the discussion since went off into a new direction

Thanks!

I will keep the question in mind once i start to play with the camera and lenses that I check out.

Sorry for the derail.

Best,

jan

My question is whether the adapters for Nikon lenses that are currently available for the GH1 permit AF and can act as parfocal lense?

We have a D300S with both WA AF zoom, and a telephoto AF zoom, both which were about $2K.

Can these be used with an adapter with their necessary capabilities?

Jan,

I had the exact same question as Mike. I would be VERY interested in buying
the camera if DID have a lens like this, however, unfortunately, I will NOT
be buying it if I can not get a 'proper' video style lens. So if/when you have
an answer, through a 3rd party solution or whatever, I would be VERY interested
in knowing about it! Thanks!

I tried to be nice and put this post in the AF-100 lens topic (which is in the NAB forum), but now that I see this thread turning back to lenses . . .

A lens like this would be great:

As posted on eBay: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Fujinon-TV-Zo...iewItemQQptZCamera_Lenses?hash=item4cee69c66d

I don't know how long that page will last, so I will copy its description here:

This is a nice condition used Fujinon TV Zoom lens, 14-84mm F1.6 with a standard c-mount that fits the 16mm Bolex, Beaulieux etc. cine / movie cameras as well as - with optional adapters (not included) - modern micro4/3 cameras like the Panasonic G1, GH-1, GF-1, EP-1, EP-2 etc. It works perfectly on my GH1 without modification.
I have tried several of the TV zoom lenses out there, and this is the one I kept until now - clearly one of the better ones IMHO. This lens is overall in very good condition. It shows minimal external signs of use but the glass is clear and clean. Zoom and distance rings are nice and smooth, the aperture ring is maybe a little bit loose but it clicks and works fine. Zoom works smoothly with a short (3/4") lever that I somehow haven't captured in the pictures. Like on most other c-mount lenses that go wider than 25mm it does show some vignetting on the wide end on the m4/3 format, but in the 1:1 EZ format on my GH1 this is fully useable and the IQ is nice, turning it into a 56-336mm (35mm equivalent) at a fixed F1.6 - great for videos on that camera format. The size is also nice, it is approx 2" wide and 5" long, very compact for that focal length. Perfect for the m4/3 cameras IMHO. As an added bonus, it also works in the macro range which makes it a really versatile lens.

Highlights:

- 14-84mm (28-168mm FF35 equivalent)
- fixed f1.6 throughout (!)
- 2 x 5" (small)

Panasonic, make one like this, please.

Jan,

Is there any plans to create an adapter for EOS lens? I have a large selection that I love to use, but they do not have manual iris controls on them. I know there is an aftermarket adapter from Hong Kong, but it is not electronic.

Thanks,
Rick

Can you offer up a couple of model numbers?

thanks,

Yes it does work, I have one and mounted my Nikon Lenses to the camera.
