don't discount the merits of a all in one body avc intra cam. shooting on large capacity p2 all day, only have ur camera, lenses, and batteries with you. Don't they'd be lugging a HPG20 in the rain forest grabbing footage for discovery anytime soon....

@Jan

Will this sensor line skip ?

No, it is a video camera. Signals are processed as video, optimized for HD recording.

Wow!
so this is a 1920x1080 aps-c width sensor fast enough for 24 frames ????

double wow !!

no wonder the 6 grand price tag

So Jan you just confirm it for real?

Because you said this does not line skip then this is a totally new sensor from Panasonic micro 4/3rds size (sorry I said apsc earlier).

And since it doesn't line skip it creates 1080p naturally on a 1:1 instead of downscaled from a still camera resolution ???????

This is BIG BIG news if its fast enough for 24 frames per second without line skipping.

This is probably intended as an entry-level camera, to test the waters and pave the way for a Red-killer. Sony announced their 35mm roadmap as including "entry level" products.
That means sub $4k aimed at schools, students, serious enthusiasts and low-end pro - notwithstanding the fact that there are many professionals using low-end video from DSLR's at present.
I view the AF100 as a DSLR in a cinema form-factor and optimized for video.
A fully tricked-up professional version will emerge, but the AF100 is not and never was intended to fill that role - it's a new market/niche test product

That would be where the upgradeable box would come in. Something akin to the SxS card recorder for the JVC HM700.

It's the same sensor as in the GH1, which didn't line skip. It's not a native 1,920 x 1,080 sensor, but a 12-megapixel chip. From everything I've read, it looks like it does pixel binning.

It's a native 1080 imager so there is no line skipping/pixel offset.

It's designed for filmmakers, by filmmakers.

GH1-7D-1080-Trumpets.jpg

... I mean, let's look at the HMC40's trumpet so you can see what a trumpet is supposed to look like:
CleanHorzTrumpetWedge.jpg

That's what it's supposed to look like. Clean line separation until the lines blur together into mush. And once they blur together, they should stay together. All the wedges should look like this. The way the 7D and GH1 are performing, there's all sorts of false detail being rendered. That false detail is a just plain wrong representation of the picture!

...

A lot of those moire artifacts will be fixed with the proper OLPF.

Panasonic is a mature camera company who's been in the business a long time. If they released a $6K camera whose "trumpet" looked worse than a $1800 camera, there would be a few engineers in Japan who would have to commit seppuku. If they release a camera that produces results that look like garbage, they'll be lose their shirts to the competition. One of the finer aspects of capitalism.

sorry Tzedekh / Danzig666 but the question was directed to Jan or someone from Panasonic

Woot!
as you can see Barry, I got to post your chart one more time !!!

talk about gettin some mileage off a jpeg

If this camera can't do 1-60 fps @ 1080 resolution, I'll be buying a Scarlet. Period. It's just that simple.

I kinda figured as much anyway, I really don't understand why that's such a hard spec to meet, but in the end I'll respect Panasonic's abilities and go with what I need most.

Someone may have said this already, I don’t have time to read through 22 pages.

Some Notebooks / Laptops already have USB 3.0 and by the time the AF-100 comes out all new ones might be made with it. I think it would be stupid to make the camera without it! If you’re going to have USB, it may as well be 3!

Instead of P2, couldn't SDXC technically handle AVC-Intra? And someone brought up a good point about the DSLRs not having B-frames. That should help a lot in the AF-100, and make the codec better than any of the DSLRs and not just the slight 24 mbit/s from 17 mbit/s improvement I was thinking of.
