AF-100 Wishlist/Suggestion Discussion Thread

With B frames in the codec, a hacked AF100 with a bit rate of over 40MBPS would be insane. I mean the codec video quality would probably be better than AVC Intra 100. Theirs also the fact that it can use SDXC cards which should handle higher bit rates than SDHC cards. The bit question is will Panasonic put a lock in the firmware to try and prevent any hacking.

Only if 4:2:2 could be added. If you could get 4:2:2 interframe IBP h.264 at 40-50mbps, that would probably compare very favorably to intraframe AVCI-100. But without 4:2:2, there's a gulf there that I don't think you could reasonably cross.

Barry is there any timeline in place for you to get a pre-production model. I think this it the camera I'm planning to shoot my feature on. Thanks for bringing so much light to this.

Apparently tester13 has gotten mjpeg 1080p to run at 4:2:2 and 60 Mbps. The numbers keep going up, although I expect him to hit a wall soon.

finding a way for it to be 10 bit encoding rather than 8 bit along with 4:2:2 i'll make it extremely advantageous on the market. the difference in 10 bit and 8 bit footage is huge. just by codec alone they would gain more in their dynamic range. and color accuracy within the 4:2:2

Yes, but consider there aren't *any* 10-bit HD camcorders on the market at all, other than AVC-Intra cameras. So I agree, but I think it's probably asking a lot.

Which is why so many of us were clamoring for a P2/AVC-Intra version!

worst case scenerio there's always cinedecks and ki pro's, but the extra 4-5 grand there blows the price point completely. ::shakes fist in anger::

Panasonic should hire this guy! Or at least give him a free camera and the source code just to make life a little easier for him. All this hacking only serves to help them sell more cameras!

Actually, the way the GH13 hacks are going, they might render the AF-100 obsolete before it's even released.

What this guy did, Panasonic could do in no time. There are obviously some reasons the high quality modes were not included. Marketing reasons, usability reasons, comparisons they did, stability problems, recording media compatibility, recording media cost, editing compatiblity, editing requirements, etc. We can ignore these when doing our own tests and using a hack, but Panasonic have to make sure it works well for all users interested in this type of camera.

Rather than reward tester13 for his efforts, it seems equally likely that Panasonic would even lock down the firmware of future cameras (e.g., the GH2) to prevent such extensive hacking.

I agree because if the $1000 model looks that good the more expensive models are in trouble.

Which also tells us that the imaging industry will be radically different going foward if the codec is all that is holding back a $1000 camera from looking like a RED so to speak. Because some of the footage from the GH13 I have seen posted is that good. But I am waiting for some time to pass and checking in on stability, real stability before picking one up.

I am sure the AF-100 will be wonderful and stable.

I know, way late in the thread to add to the list... but how about a lower cost more "video" version with a non-removable zoom lens, but the same chip? Kind of like the way the EX1 is to the EX3? Pull the HD-SDI socket and replace it with an component port to save some money. Basically, one geared more towards the wedding and event shooters. Just thought... at least an idea for a future version.

Just to put a button on the DOF discussions regarding the EX-1 and the AF-100 I have uploaded a few stills.

The two images are from an EX-1 and a 7D. The shots are to simulate comparable DOF with the two cameras. These were a quick test. Please disregard the color differences I just used the number from the EX white balance and dialed it onto the 7D. (I have not worked with the 7D from a video settings point of view, I only use it for my still work) The images are also run through Photoshop and the conversion from the Edius timeline still to sRGB is not kind to the image. But this was not about image quality, it is just about DOF. So please no image comparisons! This is not a finished deliverable!!

As mentioned in this thread, the EX-1 was shot wide open and the 7d was shot at f4 same distance away (~9ft). Quite a large DOF difference

EX-1 - then - 7D

4/3" is a lot, lot larger than 1/2" and will require a lot longer lenses for the same FOV. The EX1 will naturally have a lot more DOF. Yes, we can expect the 4/3" / AF100 DOF to be similar to APS-C / 7D. Just a tad more, but very similar. The EX1's f-number doesn't change with zoom (or at least the display doesn't) but there's a clear loss - about one stop.

Off-topic warning: Please ignore it if you will - you have been warned. Please don't take offense. The 7D image is a total mess. Look at how much sharper the EX1 image is and how much more detail there is in the hair. And don't let me get started on the shoulder area of the shirt! Ughhh. Of course, the 7D has its merits, but its flaws are here for all to see. Off-topic warning over.

I would believe the EX-1 was at f1.9.

About the warning, please read my post! This is about the first time I have clicked the thing over to video mode. I know it looked soft, that is why I put the disclaimer! Give a guy a break for a simple DOF test.

Blame the camera not me. I have the 70-200 2.8L in front of it. I could take the black crush away (I did a bit in my NLE) but that would not help with the lack of detail.
