AF-100 vs AF-100A in JAPAN as for December 2012

The Gemini can do it, but -- well, it depends on your definition of affordable. In the context of a $4,000 camera, spending $6,000 on a recorder may seem disproportionate. But, if you need it, you could get a Gemini (and some manner of HDMI->3GSDI converter) and get the job done.

OK...

...now where's their moderately affordable, incredibly well-integrated companion P2 recorder? This almost checks all my boxes.

If that's true the only thing missing for me is a LOG gamma. I would have liked a P2 version but you can't have it all...:)

Further on log, I found this by Suny Behar in a document titled "Best Practices" Guide to Digital Cinematography using Panasonic Professional HD Cameras":
If not P-10LOG, then what should I use to capture the most amount of data coming from the sensor in 4:4:4 Mode?
The short answer is FILM-REC, at 600% DYNAMIC LEVEL, and all else set to zero (Black Stretch Level, etc...). This merits some explanation. As we have noted above, P-10LOG is not a RAW or SENSOR Mode for the camera. It is simply a method for allowing you to print your DPX dailies directly to Kodak film stock. Yet, whenever we see the word LOG used in other digital cinema cameras it almost always refers to some type of raw mode response (S-Log, Pana-Log, etc...). In those camera systems, those raw mode responses are optimized to efficiently map their imager's full dynamic range onto a 10 bit file, for later remapping back to a linear response at higher bit depths in post production for linear color correction. For the AJHPX3700 P2 VariCam, that “Sensor Mode” is in fact FILM-REC at 600% DYNAMIC LEVEL with other settings at zero.

^ Interesting find, Barry, though that's in 4:4:4 mode.
The 100a is 10-bit 4:2:0 right, being AVCHD?

Anybody seen Jan lately?

100 is 8 bit 4:2:0 AVCHD internal, 8 bit 4:2:2 external

100a is reported as 8 bit 4:2:0 AVCHD internal, 10 bit 4:2:2 external

Not good news if true. A big part of the AF100's appeal is its "everything in one package" abilities.

GH3 sensor and electronics? Panasonic needs to give the full specs up! I have a hard time believing but want to :)

I wouldn't doubt it to be true, considering the price where the camera sits. Currently the lowest rung on the large sensor internal 422 ladder is the C300, afaik.

In almost two years of ownership, clients have requested better-than-avchd exactly once... I'm not exactly a big time dp, nor are many AF owners, I'd reckon. Nonetheless, considering output is now up to 10 bit, the time is right to release a perfectly integrated P2 recorder as a companion for the AF. It can plug in via SDI, bolt in place of the side handle or underneath, pull power from an adapter that sandwiches between battery and body, and record any of your various AVCI flavors, VFR, etc. It'd be as close to a self contained broadcast solution and still price in well under the C300.

Thats my gear dream, at least... But if we're talking possibly GH3 sensor and codecs now, that's pretty darned close.

yeah, the news of a different sensor/electronics isn't with the rest of the AF100A stuff that we've seen but that would be fine by me. The log stuff, if it's possible and they are able to do it on an AF100A would cinch it for me, but again, this is the first I heard it suggested. No question, I'd go for that

AVCHD is and will always be 8bit 4:2:0. Otherwise, it wouldn't be AVCHD. Panasonic is supposed to release AVC-LongG eventually (which is 4:2:2 and should work with SDXC cards), but I have a hard time seeing Panasonic releasing a AVC-LongG camera without an major announcement and before Micro-P2 is released.

Boy, it's hard to see a lot of interest in this camera w/o some sort "wow" factor beyond 10 bit - esp if that 10 bit recording can only be accomplished with a bulky 3rd party off camera recording device.

Considering the advances made in 2 years by other camera companies (with more sure to come in April) - and the massive financial bath Panny has taken - you'd think they wouldn't be holding anything back.

I would not be surprised if 100A is the kind of "S" models on the iphone : a transition for a soon-to-come full upgrade

I'm sorry, but that's how rumors get started. It just needs an uncredited somebody to say he heard from somebody who heard from somebody for us desperate children to believe it and start discussing it and forget all the logic.
IMO there's exactly zero chances the AF100A will have the GH3 sensor and electronics. Has any of the Panasonic A models had a different sensor? A different sensor is basically a different camera. If it was the GH3 sensor it would be called the AF200 or something. I'm sure that the updates on the A camera will be the ones already published and nothing else. If there was a new sensor it would be all over the Japanese and other press releases because it would be a big selling point. A new sensor would be great and would turn the attention again to the AF100. But the A camera isn't it. I will wait till NAB and see if Panasonic reacts to the reality of the market somehow and see what cameras there will be.

Let's all just wait for concrete info.

In other news, I got hooked up real good on a AF100A today - $4097 with 3 year Panasonic Australia warranty. Tempting.
