AF 100 Codec and television station edit systems

I've been shooting with my AF100 for some time now trouble free. I use Clipwrap to "wrap" AVCHD codec in a .mov container. I've handed those files off trouble free to both AVID and FCP edit systems.

The TV station edit system apparently cannot read the AVCHD codec in a .mov wrapper on their edit system. Not good as client was on a tight deadline.

It would have been nice to talk to the editor before hand but that was impossible. Not even sure what edit system they were trying to edit on.

I was thinking of transcoding the AVCHD codec to both H.264, mpeg4 and Apple ProRez on the next job just to be safe. But what if the edit system can't read those either? Any of you have any tricks or tips?

Nice to also have the AVID DNxHD codec in your tool box.

Its free and bridges the gap when you need it.

I consider it the universal codec for my cross platform / cross facility work.

Yeah, a lot of stations (like the one I work at) are PC/Avid based, so DNxHD is a pretty universal codec. Another option is, depending on your own editor, to covert it to a P2 format (either DVCProHD or AVC-I). Again, a huge number of stations are shooting on P2 cameras, so it's another generally universal format.

Not even sure if they were editing on an AVID. Could have been Grass Valley or Edius or ? Long story short, I'm not shooting or handing off any footage unless I know their post-production flow codecs.

That would be the decision I would make, and that way you can give them what they need.

I run into the same problem a lot. Generally it is people using Mac's but I'm often holding people's hands through a WMP update just so they can review footage. Ironically I know of at least one instance where someone thought they needed an "up to date" powerbook because they couldn't play back AVCHD on their ancient XP workstation (and they got one!). I ALWAYS want to know if someone I am delivering to is using something other than FCP, AVID or CS5.

+1 on DNxHD codec
