Even without external recording- the camera doesn't need a hack. The original gh1 needed one, it was muddy. But the codec on the AF holds up so well- what's the point.
What the Hack. Iam convinced that hacking will be possible, but you know, it doesn't comply with the philosophy of Panasonic that what they "give" you is what they want you to have. What we want is not important as long as we buy the product and that is just what we did. To tell you the truth, I just don't give a xxxxx. My camera is working fine, the picture looks good - even in the cinema -, so in the meantime Iam saving my money for the next cam......and I can tell you this: It won't be a Sony (bad experience with the EX1 and the EX3). If the next Panasonic (AF200?) will have a larger Sensor, higher bitrate and 10bits 422 color space, no P2 but SD, they can use the same body and I will buy one for sure.
"Guys, There is no pathway into the CODEC board. Just give it a rest. It isn't possible. If you want higher bitrates, use an outboard recorder."
Don't tell that to Vitaliy. Or the guys from Andromeda.
And as far as comparing hacked GH2 footage to AF100 Nanoflash footage, the GH2 GOP1 hack wins. After a feature I shot this summer/fall with two AF100's as the A cameras and a GH2 as the B-cam, I sold the two AF100's and purchased a second GH2 because the image quality was that much better. The only place the AF100 outperformed the GH2 was in green screen shots where the chroma 4:2:2 sub-sampling provided for better keys. And since we use an external audio mixer on all our shoots, not having the XLR inputs on the GH2's doesn't really affect our workflow. And while it's true that color balancing is a bit cumbersome with the GH2, all it takes is a little extra effort and you're good to go.
