Can someone please help me out.

I'm looking to get a decent shotgun mic to use for weddings with my af-100.

I need one for Saturday and I'm looking to buy around 250-400 dollars.

Anyone recommend something?

I have a Rode NTG-1 permanently mounted as a top mic, and an NTG-2 as a boom mic. Both pretty cheap mono shotguns, both do the job pretty well.

its kind of funny, but with mics you can find cheap around 250$ , like rode ntg2 (like i have) , but then if u want anything better the next price range starts like from 650 - 700usd.... ntg3 for example...., but from what i have heard its completely different beast! but also from rode own clips - i ve heard that its not the best idea to use it as on camera mic...... if say true sound is too complicated thing to me, and i kind of gave up on it.... if i need a good quality sound - i ask a pro to record it....

Rode ntg 2 is nice and cheap , but u ll get a reasonable amount of static noise , its much less then u would normally get from some handycam internal mic..... but there will be some, still i dont think there is anything better at that price point!

also ..camcorders own mic holder is maybe not the best idea! - its ok if its on tripod, but if u r going to make a lot of movements - the shaking can add some unwanted noise!

so i d like to ask a question as well, who prefer to use some other Mic Holder instead of "internal" one, which one do u use?
and 1 more thing - the wind shield .... what do u use with your rode mics? i bought rode deluxe dead cat - kind of crappy - loosing hairs all the time...

Audio Technica AT875R: a good, short shotgun at approximately $180. Compares favorably to microphones costing several times its price.

Not sure about this advice. I believe the only difference between the ntg1 and ntg2 is that the ntg2 has internal battery powered phantom power. If the boom mic is plugged into the a f100, then use the cam to supply phantom power. If you were suggesting using the ntg2 with a wireless rig like a Senn G3 system, which doesn't supply phantom power, than this is ok. Otherwise, whats the point?

If you want good sound don't mount a shot gun on your camera. I use the camera mic for ambiance and if I need to record dialogue I use a lavalier or shot gun properly placed as close to the talent as possible.

Not sure about what advice? The NTG-1 is small enough to live on the cam as a top mic, the NTG-2 is bigger so I keep it in the blimp as a boom mic.

NTG-1 or NTG-2 (same mic, the NTG-2 can use a AA as well as phantom power). With the AF100, since you have phantom power from the camera you will be using, I would get the NTG-1 as it is less expensive and smaller (which I did). If you want to go better than the NTG, the way to go at that point is the venerable Sennheiser 416, but it is not cheap at around $1k (though you can find it used from $500-700, and they last forever).

I really want a 416, but I don't record enough sound myself to justify owning one (I use a sound recordist on most gigs though and he owns one).

I've been happy with the Audio-Technica AT897. It has similar features to the Rode NTG-2, but costs a bit less.
