af 100 and Samuri set up

Just wondering if anyone can help me set up my recently purchased Samuri recorder with my af100. I am able to record an sd signal by turning on down convert for my sdi output but when set to 720 or 1080i I get a scrambled signal. Does anyone know of a link that explains the set up from start to finish to get it all working ? If so please direct me towards it.

I am connecting the camera to the Samuri via the sdi out.

Thanks.

Do you have the manual?

Download it from the Atomos site. Should explain everything you need to know.

I am wondering if your AF100 is set up to use the SDI output correctly because apart from matching the setting on the Samurai..its a very simple and intuitive device to set up.

Hi Shooter,

Yes I have got the manual from Atomos and after playing with the Samurai, camera and updating the firmware on both devices, no joy. I am wondering if i have a dodgy BNC cord ? The pictures I do manage to get recorded onto the Samurai are as mentioned sd only due to putting the camera in down convert to sdi out. But even then I get an interference with the audio and the picture signal ( slight but still apparent ). If I put the camera in 720 / 1080i out to sdi port the signals get real wacky and scrambled. I am also wondering if I got a dodgy Samurai as you say it should be easy to set up. The scrambled HD signals are a device issue and not user error maybe ? What would be the settings I need to get the camera to be sending the correct signal to the Samurai ? Please let me know if you are familiar with them. Thanks.

Right now, it is the only setting i can find that gives me a picture that I can record and is not messed up real bad, although it is not perfect.

BTW - what drive are you using in the Samurai?

Have you tied another SDI cable?

Did you format your drive in the Samurai? ( or elsewhere)

Running the 500gb hitachi that comes as a bundled drive ( purchased the unit 2 days ago ). Yes, tried other cables, no love. Formatted the drives in the unit its self, no where else. I think I have a dodgy unit, it can't be this hard.

Yes ... you may have a faulting device.

Its is basically plug and play.

HAve you access to a SSD to test if its a drive issue? The drive could be faulty.

What firmware do you have? I would swap out the cables (as you have done) and check to make sure you have the latest firmware. I know that you should be able to atleast monitor the signal regardless of if you have a drive in it, I just did it today actually.

Also, try attaching it when both the samurai and the camera are on... I sometimes get a bad signal when I power on the camera or change modes on the camera, but a quick reconnect of the cable always solves it for me. (I know they are working on this, it much better in FW version 2.8 than it was with firmware 2.6 that came with my unit.)

All that fails, I would say it is possible you got a faulty unit. I would not worry too much if that is the case though, sometimes stuff is DOA when it comes to equipment, and Atomos is better than any other company I have dealt with when it comes to standing by their product. I received a bad unit, and they bent over backwards to get me a new one in time for my shoot. So, contact Atomos if you don't get it sorted, and they will make sure you get it up and running.

Thanks for the help guys. Have tried with both drives that came in the bundle. I think the drives are fine as they mount if finder no prob. Its the signal, it is either getting to the unit messed up or the unit is not dealing with it as it should. Unfortunately I dont have any other device that I can hook up to the unit using the SDI out from the camera to check that the signal is leaving the camera clean. That would be the next thing to do to help eliminate possible issues. I will take a drive to my buddies place who has a broadcast monitor and check to see if all is well there with that device.

Have done the FW updates for both the Samurai & AF100 and nothing seemed to change. Have tried all the booting up sequence possibilities too. I will be calling the Australian distributors tomorrow who should be able to tell me what is wrong, luckily the shoot I purchased this for has moved from tomorrow to a later date.

Thanks again for your help !

I also have the scrambled signal problem. I have purchased two samurais and both are DOA. One will not show a locked picture on the monitor or record a stable signal. The second shows a good picture and will record but will randomly stop recording. The screen goes blank, no response, the video file is corrupt and unusable. This will happen after a few seconds or hours, totally unpredictable. Very frustrating to have over $3000 worth of gear that does not work. I am willing to try one more time, but this is ridiculous.

What HDs are you using, are they supported, and are you sure all your cables, both the included mini BNC and the standard BNC you have to supply, are good? Having checked all that, have you contacted Atomos about it? You may have had bad luck with the units (as sometimes apparently happens), but I know that when I had issues with mine when I first got it, they did everything they could to get me up and running ASAP.

I experienced scrambled video on mine once but that was due to having my AF101 set to overcrank so it was a user error. Other than that I only had a couple of bugs with triggering.
