Advice?

Hey guys, this is my first post on this forum, but I've been a guest here for a while.

Well anyways... tomorrow I have to apply for colleges, and I really want to go into film (mainly directing), but the thing is, the nearest film school is in Niagara (near Toronto) and I'm in Windsor (near Detroit). I'm only 17, so I can't move out on my own just yet, but I've got nothing else to do.

So I decided to take advertising/graphic design at a nearby college. I plan on graduating from that, then start my career in advertising. Then eventually work my way into voice acting. The problem with this plan is, there's no film in it. I really want to pursue a career in film, but I'm really confused as to how I can do that.

Do you guys have any advice for me?

Welcome.

I would try to find a production crew in the area that you can intern with. You'll start out at the bottom, but you'll learn the ropes from that point. Tell them you'd like to learn as much as they can teach you as well (or explain what they're doing while they're doing it). Some people LOVE telling you all about equipment. Others, not so much. I would wait a little on that second part, though. Don't overdo it on day 1.

Realize you aren't going to get paid for this, but the experience will set you ahead later.

Have you checked out the film dept at Ryerson?

I visited about 7 years ago, was pretty interesting. The drinking age was a +. Has that changed since then?

Sounds like a great idea. Thanks!

No, I haven't. But it's still too far. :\
