Anyone want to give me some advice on anything Photography related? I'll take anything. shot, advice, lens advice, lighting advice, technical advice, legal advice. There's this girl i met in my photography 101 class. She knows a few things about Phptography I dont know jack and I dont want to seem lame any good Advice so when I go out ther and shoot.

try to take the lens cap off before you start looking through the viewfinder. that always looks lame. dont forget to wind the film before taking a picture. at least pretend like you are thinking about composition etc between shots. dont just go out and fire off 36 frames and be done. take a log of all of your settings for each frame and bracket your exposures so you know what worked or didnt work. dont drop your camera. get a cool hemp neck strap signed by ansel adams or something. these will all (except for the last one) help you appear to not be lame.

If you actually want to not be lame I suggest you shoot alot and read alot and think about what you are doing.

There's nothing lame in not knowing something. What's lame is not wanting to learn. What's most lame is pretending to know something you don't.

Introduce yourself and ask her if she'd be interested in going out shooting with you to give you a few pointers as she clearly seems to have a good photographic eye and you'd like to learn something from her. :)

Then take a picture of her and post it here for us to judge (your photographic skills of course! :) )

good call mikko - we need pics of her before we can judge if you are lame

and seriously I wouldnt hesitate to ask her to show you what shes doing like mikko said. you cant be the best at everything. you could probably teach her about something she doesnt know much about. i suck at cooking and constantly ask my wife questions while I play in the kitchen. Shes nice enough to put up with me and handy enough with the fire extinguisher it all works really well. photography is one of those things that just takes practice. you cant just do a few things and get great pictures everytime. there are things that help but so many of them are visual (it is photography after all) that you have to see them a few times and do it a few times before it starts to work out. start posting your stills in the still forum and get some opinions and advice. thats some of the best help you can get probably and its free. back to the girl - the lamest thing you can do is be some know-it-all phony. she'll see right through you and probably run away.

as for ansel adams I would wager that he is the most recognizable name in photography. Not the best, by any means, but his work in yellowstone etc is quite remarkable none the less. I'm more of an Ansel Adams fan just for what hes written on photography. I think part of the recognizability problem is that people see a van gogh and ask who painted it and then they know they name. With photography I see more people ask about the content or how it was made than the artist that produced it. At least thats my reasoning why most people could name you a few great painters, but struggle to name more than Adams (if him even) as great photographers.

Now that there is some smooth advice....

No sense in pretending you are somebody you are not. Heck, if you are in a photography 101 class like the one I was in...she and the entire class will see what you are posting...and how you are doing...

If you come from an honest place...without coming off like a complete booby....you'll do well. Its a great strategy when you want to get to know someone you like better. Be brave and be yourself. And if they do not respond well, you probably don't want to know them long term anyway....
