Advice Requested on Sound Setup

Much gratitiude to Oleg, as always, and now I am feeling much more comfortable about what I am doing when setting levels.

I will set the camcorder at -20db in relation to the MixPre 0db tone (perhaps raise the level strength in camcorder a few db's for quieter mics) and drive the MixPre pots until average dialog level is at approximately +6db to +10db on the MixPre (should translate to about -14db to -10db in camcorder).

Oleg has said all of this before, it just takes awhile for me to catch up and understand.

there is no clarification , no one sow the schems if it by pass or 50 db pad infront

I was just taking Barry's word that the preamps would not be used at line level but I see your point that it would really truly only be clarified if someone could show the tech schemes

I have to say, I'm assuming here, based on the improvement shown in MattInSTL's testing. Without seeing the schematics there's no way to know for sure exactly what's happening and whether they're truly being bypassed. But it is possible to get better sound by using an external mixer and taking the line-level signal into the camera. At least on the DVX.

Thanks Barry,

Bottom line is that getting better sound is possible and that is what matters most to me.
