I'm brand new to this forum so, please forgive me off the bat if I am posting this in the totally wrong forum.
The reason I am posting here is that I am going to begin shooting a documentary within the next month or so. I am in the process of ordering a brand new HVX200 for this project in general, but more specifically so I can become acclimated to the HVX line of cameras. I have used the DVX100's extensively and had rented an HVX200 to shoot something about 2 months ago and fell in love with the look it gives. At the time though, I only shot with tape because I had never read up enough I thought on how to use P2 cards.
Now after reading more about the P2 medium, I still feel a little intimidated. I am just worried that since tape no longer is necessary to record onto, that I might screw someting up in the shooting process and loose all my footage.
Anyways, a little about the project I am going to be working on. It is a small documentary (8-11 minutes) that is going to be about the architectural history of Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. It is going to mix interviews, with b-roll footage I will shoot of architecture, landscapes, and design areas that I will film around the city along with archival photos, and of course music. One reason why I think the HVX is so dynamic and why I would really like to use it for this project is the ability it gives to do fast and slow motion recording via P2 Cards. I would like to do some really cool time lapse things when I record my b-roll footage of the buildings. I also have pieced together a few lighting kits by buying random lights at garage sales, ebay, ect, so I have a fairly decent lighting kit I will use for lighting the interviews that includes:
1. 1K Lowell Soft Box
2. 2 Lowell Tota Lights that can be bulbed up to 750 w
3. 3 Smaller wattage lights of mixed manufacture (2 are color tran, one is smith victor, wattage on these lights range from 150-350)
I have a few other lights too, but I think this is what I am going to go with for this project. I have dimmers for all the lights and am going to purchase the appropriate grip gear (gels, flags, ect...) to help give me the greatest flexibility in my lighting.
Lastly I am going to buy a Firestore drive instead of relying solely on the P2 cards since the Firestore can hold a much large amount of information for a comperable price of buying two P2 cards. I figure I will need this for any day I shoot interviews since they could last up to an hour each.
I have decided I am going to be shooting in DVCPRO HD 720p @ 24fps
The NLE I am going to be using to edit on is FCP Studio 2
I am going to be editing on a MacBook Pro, Specs are as follows: 2.4 Ghz Intel Core Duo; 2GB 667 Mhz DDR2 SDRam.
Sorry to be dragging on but I thought it would be best to give background on my project my questions make more sense.
Question #1
As I said I am a little aprehensive about this new recording medium because you don't have the security of tapes to shoot on to. I am worried about botching the set up of the Firestore device when shooting or screwing up the download of it to my computer. How hard is this process to set up and understand?
Question #2
Since I am editing on a MacBook, will my computer be able to handle editing this project in DVCPro HD @ 720P?
Question #3
As I had said the one reason I really want a HVX200 for this project is the ability to do fast and slow motion. Will I be able to shoot my b-roll footage in one frame rate (lets say slow motion at 32fps for instance) and mix this footage with my other footage (interviews, ect) that will be filmed in the standard project frame rate (24fps?)
I know there are many other questions I have, but these are some of the ones I am most interested in hearing opinions on. I have about a month or a little less before I begin shooting this, so I figured this would be a great time to start hearing what people have to say and then hopefully base a shooting plan from that.
Any help any of you guys could give to me would be much appreciated.
