Advice on this lens for the AF100

Hi All,

Looking for a zoom lens. I wanted to see your thoughts on the Ziess Planar 100mm Makro (http://www.photozone.de/canon_eos_ff/508-zeiss100f2eosff)

The concern I have is that its a 100mm and on the AF100 with the crop factor this will make it 200mm. Considering it has no image stabiliser, do you think this will be a problem?

I currently only have 2 lenses for the af100, a Voigtlander 25mm and a Zeiss Planar 50mm. I have a Canon 70-200 2.8 for my 5DMKII, but would like to dedicate that lens to the 5D.

I was thinking about the Canon EOS 100mm Macro with IS but with the absence of the Birger mount i'm hesitant.

What's your thoughts.

Cheers

Sean.

I have the 100mm (in ZF.2 mount), it's a great lens. But I do find I go to the 85mm f/1.4 more often. I rarely use them without sticks so I haven't missed stabilization.

Excellent lens. Macro function is great. Extremely fast. First class in mechanical and optical terms. I never miss image stabilisation because I never would even think about shooting with a 100 mm hand held.

The extreme close ups on this were shot with the Zeiss 100mm Makro Planar from about 17" away. Other shots were using the Olympus 35-100. Shot with a GH13 720p60 at 1/125 conformed to 23.98 in Cinema Tools.

+1 on the Zeiss being a sweet lens.

Thanks all. It is a great lens, but the person I was going to but off ended up deciding not to sell it. So I ended up buyin a Nikon 105mm AF-S VR Micro f/2.8 if-ed.

Havn't had a play with it yet, but has anyone tried this lens or think it was a good choice?

Nice lens, but if you're able to, I recommend returning it and instead getting the Nikon 105mm f/2.0 DC.

Nearly the same price, legendary lens, one stop faster, incredible bokeh (via background defocus control), hard aperture ring.

Very pretty shot. GH13 holds up very well.

I too go to the 85mm 1.4 more often and is also much lighter than the 100mm. I can get away without using a lens support with the 85mm... bu tI believe the 100mm is too heavy to safely use without one.

It should be fine. The Zeiss 100mm mentioned weights 680g or 1.5lbs, which is under the 1kg/2.2lbs limit for the mount.

Thanks. Yes, the GH13 is no slouch, but have to admit it has taken a back seat to my GH2 and AF100s. About the only time it gets used these days is when I need the extra cam.

And the Zeiss 100mm is just fine on the AF100 without needing support.
