Advice on safe firmware upgrades...

The first thing I noticed is the release notes recommend the camera be on AC instead of a battery. I presume the upgrade takes awhile and this is so the battery doesn't die in the middle of it.

It looks like the EX1 BC-U1/U2 Battery Charger will work with the Swit single pole to XLR adapter. Does anyone see a problem with that?

The second issue is that it says after formatting the SxS card in the camera is should be inserted in the computer to copy the bin file to the SxS card. Plenty of SxS cards, but neither my computer nor my two multi card readers support SxS.

Do you suppose its okay to leave the card in the camera, connect a USB cable and drop the binary file onto the SxS card there?

The answer to both of those turned out to be YES! One thing not covered in the installation instructions is if you do it this way you have to unplug the USB cable before starting the upgrade. No problem there. Now to test a MxR adapter with a 16Gig Transcend class 10 card.

EDIT: There is no problem with using my MxR adapter after the upgrade.

I did my upgrade a couple weeks ago with an xlr adapted swit on the 12volt, and a bpu-60 in the battery compartment. Went fine.

I just love those Swit XLR plug adapters. They make the connections neat and compact. One of my best purchases.

Agreed. The compactness of it makes it the one to have. The pigtail versions out there also create opportunities for the cord to be yanked out if it catches on something.

I do have one with two XLR plugs and a D-Tap on one cable, but you're right and I'll only use it if I have something else I need to power. But for running the camera off the single pole and the Nano off the D-tap the XLR plug adapter is perfect.

One more word. The total installation time is ~24 minutes. If you use a battery you need to make sure is has enough juice for full power for that long. Also, the screen goes blank for several minutes in the middle of the install. However, that's normal. Just let it keep running.

Yes, there are 3 stages to the upgrade process while the new firmware is being burned into the flash ROM inside the camera. The second stage of the firmware upgrade has the LCD screen go to black. It lasts, from what I recall, about 5 minutes. You will see the tally indicator light on the rear of the camera throughout the "black stage".
