I will be producing/shooting an 8 episode serial drama in Kinshasa (DRCongo) later this year, and I wanted a sanity check/advice on the equipment I was planning on bringing. I need to be pretty self sufficient, as getting/modifying equipment is not easy once I am there. My crew will consist largely of inexperienced, but dedicated people. Most of the shots will be interiors, but there will be a few critical outdoor scenes, and some night shooting.
I currently have:
HVX200 (20 gigs of P2 memory), Rode NTG-2, wireless lav mic, 3 Redheads (500w), Glidecam smooth shooter, 501HDV/351MVB2K tripod, portable reflector and green screen.
This is the kit I have been using to shoot music videos, and do some documentary work. To date, most of the shooting has been 720p, and it is most likely to stay that way. I have had access to some rails and a jib on occasion, as well as a studio monitor (not HD). It has worked pretty well for me so far, but this next project is a step up in complexity and ambition. This isn't a high budget project, so I've been trying to piece together a relatively complete kit without many frills.
I was going to add:
lighting kit: Lowel DV Pro 55 kit
35mm lens adapter: RedRock M2 (and follow focus)
35 mm lenses: I have 3 canon lenses for my 20D (including a 60mm macro, 75-300 zoom, and 17-85). I think I need to add a wide lens at least.
jib: looking for something easy to set up, that is light, and gives me about 8 feet of reach (wihtout the tripod). The Advanta-jib light looks interesting, any comments?
pan and tilt head: I was thinking about a VariZoom MC100. My bigger question is: do I need a motorized pan and tilt head, or will a manual work? I know this depends on what exactly I want to do with it, but I was hoping to get some feedback from those who have used both on advantages/disadvantages of both systems. To note, the interior spaces where I will be shooting will be confined.
tripod. I love my HDV501 head, but I need a tripod with more weight capacity.
field monitor: For shots in a controlled environment, we will be recording direct to disk with Adobe's OnLocation. For glidecam shots, and street shooting, I need a portable monitor. I was thinking the IKAN V8000HD.
audio: I was hoping to record via motu traveller to a laptop with Boom Recorder. Any thoughts? AT-4073a Shotgun Microphone, and 2 more wireless lav mics.
So, that is the list of what I think I need. Is there anything I missed?
Thanks in advance for the feedback.
