Advice on online demo quality??

Hey cats,

No this isn't DVX footage but I am a member and use my DVX all the time as a film maker. This is my demo reel as an actor.
Something's weird in it. When there's horizontal movement, the edges of things or people get jagged and "combed". What is that?
I'm using Sorenson 3 in QT pro.
I appreciate any help! thanks

Hm...usually taking down the quality a certain level from the original footage will do this, it's just how the quality change affects movement and apparently cuts, although it could be something more.

Very nice reel, James Remar in shadow creeped me out. Very nice range, which is of course what you want with a reel. I especially love the subtleys in the last section, it was a good clip to close on. Also nice to hear you're a DVX fan. I was wondering where you went to school?

Hey Kellyboy, nice reel from what I saw (watched about 1/2 but taking too long to stream and I've got to jet) ...

Maybe it has something to do with the streaming, but the audio was out of sync. Funny, when I read your post about the camera not being the DVX, I expected crap homemade video & a garbage reel. Very pro & a nice surprise.

As far as QT/Sorenson 3, I'm not a fan of it. If you're going to compress with QT, download the new QT7 Pro with the h.264 codec. You'll get a smaller file size out of it and a MUCH better video quality. Also, not sure what audio codec you're using, but I think it's IMA 4:1 that's the best available in the selection of choices.

use IMA 4:1 for your audio compression, the audio quality bugged me more than the picture quality.

Take the uncompressed copy of the video and use Sorenson Squeeze the best program I have ever used for bringing file size down and not giving up quality.

Joseph,

As John said, this is an interlacing issue. One thing you should check when you encode it is the field order, you can set it to encode lower field first, upper or none. None will make it frame based and make the motion appear smoother but requires more bandwidth to download. A better option is to try the opposite of what was set when you encoded this version - if lower try upper...

Hope this helps. Great reel. Do you do independent movies?

Hey everybody!
Thanks for the kind words! Really! Sometimes ya' need to hear that, as work is sporadic at best.

ChuckS, I absolutely do indy movies.
FindingMattch, I went to school at teh American Academy of Dramatic Arts.

Thanks for the help everybody!
I'll try de-interlacing now see if it helps.

One more thing,

I would LOVE to use H.264. It really works well, but I can't count on everyone being able to view it. I know that QT7 is a free download and all, but there were issues for a while about the plug in not being available or something.

As it's now available for windows (even the retail version of QT7 Pro), it shouldn't be as much of a concern. That said, you'll certainly want/need a link on the page for QT7 download, and letting viewers know they'll need QT7 or higher to view the reel.

Hey Envision,

Any idea how I would do that? Put a link on the page for people to upgrade to QT 7

Joseph Kell

Do what?

Putting a link on the page for people to upgrade to QT7 is what you'd want to do ... it's not only a professional courtesy, but helps/encourages others to be able to view your work ... make the link pop up in a new window though, so it doesn't take them away from your site.

OR, do you mean HOW do you put a link on your page? Depending on what you're using (if you're doing your own page), I may or may not be able to help you with that one ... I use Dreamweaver for all my HTML/Web work.
