Advice on microphones

Well i'm going to be recording my family's christmas party on wednesday night, and I was going to rent a separate unidirectional mic for my dvx100 because i need to record some conversations between people even though there are like 20 others in the room...So I was wondering if the dvx100's mic would be enough or if i should go rent some kind of shotgun mic or what?

A shotgun mic of some kind will probably give you much better sound. Whether or not it will reduce the background noise will depend on the mic, its closeness to the people speaking, and a variety of other factors.

Do you plan to have it on a boom pole, with someone handling the boom? What kind of mic placement do you envision?

If you're worried about amient noise from the other conversation, I would just rent a few lav mics. This will give you the highest quality sound for conversations hands down. If you're recording a larger group conversation though, rent a shotgun mic, and preferabbly one which will allow you to have a wide or narrow "capture" field. Good Luck!

I went out today to my local recording studio (www.revolutionaudio.ca) just down the street, and I rented out a cardioid condenser mic for 20 bucks for the whole week. Its directional, and I tried it out and it works exactly as I wanted it to work. I tried it out with a bunch of people talking beside/behind the camera and it only picked up sounds from around the front.

i got this one

works fine, and I'm planning to have it mounted on the camera.
