GH4 Advice on GH4 Drone settings

Hi GH4 owners,

I am hiring a professional drone company who shoot (luckily) with the GH4, i can choose the settings but i need some advice.

The footage will be mixed with my Canon C100 WDR picture profile. And CC/graded ofcourse.

What i think to do:

- 4k 30p (or is the crop and the rolling shutter going to be an issue? - would be nice though to crop into the image in post)
- How is the 1080 60p in detail?
- Shutter speed will be high i guess do to the lack of an ND filter.
- Most important; the picture style, i read somewhere that cinelike V or D is flat enough?
- At least a 14mm lens @f8 orso

I won't be having time to fiddle with the camera for long, as they will be there only for a hour orso.
In the past i had a GH2 for some years so i do understand the menu system somewhat.

Or do you guys think i will be better of letting the drone company decide, and not being a smartass?
I just don't want to be running into surprises in post trying to match the footage with my C100.

Thanks for any input.

-Rolling Shutter is much better in HD then 4K.

-60p & 60 fps footage is just as detailed as 24p & 30p in HD. Above 60 fps the image gets softer.

-Bring 0.6, & 1.2, screw-in ND filters.

-Erik Naso has a blog post about matching the GH4 to the C300/100 in Log & Wide DR.

-I haven't dove into it too deep but explore the WiFi app. At minimum it might be useful for changing settings once the GH4 is mounted to the drone.

I wouldn't recommend using the wifi at all on a drone. It can interfere with the control systems and video downlink. There's a funny video of Chase Jarvis dunking a Phantom in the Antarctic with a Sony RX100 with wifi on.

I'm looking for some good GH4 settings and what filters to use. I'll try the ND filters. Would a polarizing filter work to cut the glare on aerial shots?

No, rolling shutter is much worse in 4K. Ask the aerial company what frame rate they recommend shooting to get the best footage. If they suggest 60p find someone else. A true professional aerial company can shoot 24p with a 180 shutter and get fantastic footage. Just hit record before taking off and let it roll the whole time it's in the air. My Gh4 aerial mounts have three servos that allow me to control stop/start record, aperture and focus with my Rokinon Cine lenses.

Ask them to send you raw footage straight out of the camera with no processing so you will know exactly what you will be getting. If your shot selection for your shoot requires relatively high speeds from the Drone I would ask to see high speed raw footage at 24p, 25p with a 180 shutter to confirm that it meets your expectation.

I hope this helps.

Hi Wayne, Mind if I ask how you control focus and aperture on your GH4 while flying? I've searched but am not finding anything.
