Advice on Canon choices

I shoot mainly shorts and want also want a decent stills camera.

I'm a filmmaker who's shot on RED, P2 and xha1 with brevis, all which have differing, but great looks. As an ex pro photographer who's keen to dive into the DSLR pond I'd love a camera that's great for both stills and motion.

realistically any of my shorts won't make it to DI stage to be burned to film, and I have a good selection of nikkor primes from my film days, But I'm sick of waiting on Nikon and the possibility being let down by their next release, so I'm thinking of forgetting my prime collection and moving to Canon. I realize things are changing quickly now, so don't want to sink myself in too deep then have canon release the next cool thing ( budget is an issue).

So I'm thinking a 7D with the 17-55 zoom, or maybe the 550 with the 17-55. Then when the new 5D (mk3?) comes out later, sell and buy that. Any thoughts from the people who know...

Thx

For a Canon there is no reason to forget your Nikon's at all... I use all my Nikon and Zeiss F mount prime lenses on a 5D and 7D with adapters. Since the GH1 has improved leaps and bounds recently, it just emphasizes again why you should not get too attached to one brand going forward. Keep your options open and don't sell the farm to switch over to something else cause it will change again in a matter of time.

i have 5DmkII & T2i and can use both my canon & nikon glass via a $65 adaptor.

its a tough call between the 3 canon DSLR's if only buying one. if money is tight then i wouldnt hesitate to just get the T2i because the video IQ is just as good as the 7D. the 7D body offers a much more robust photography experience though over the T2i but its IQ for photos and video is the same.

the 5DmkII is better @ 3200 and above over ther 7D & T2i but will you need to be shooting in those upper ISO's often? i love my 5DmkII but have really come to appreciate the T2i as a very competent partner and backup.

id be taking a closer look at the lenses you might want to work with and let that dictate the body you will need. do you want to start investing in EF-S lesnes to get your wide angles? thats my only complaint about the 1.6x cameras.
