GH2 Advice for Timelapse - Variable Movie Mode, Timelapse Assembler or Timer Remote?

There seem to be a lot of options these days for timelapse. From what I've gleaned over the past 30 minutes, intervalometers (of which I don't have) offer the best image quality/resolution/dynamic range. Using variable movie mode at 300% then speeding up in post is the next best quality-wise, then the timelapse assembler.

Does this sound right? I'm happy to be wrong!

Oh yeah, my final output will likely be 1080i50 for broadcast. And I use the GH2 with Sanity 5 patch.

Thanks all!

Using an intervelometer is always the best way. This is what I own and use with my GH2. Available on Amazon:

The Amazon description says it has a fixed wire, but mine actually arrived with a detachable wire (which I prefer).

Shoot RAW and bring your images into Lightroom. There's a GREAT plugin called LRTimelapse (donationware) which lets you ramp adjustments made in lightroom, across your entire sequence of images.

Here are the first and last still from a sequence I shot. (I needed to do a whole bunch of things different, starting with some ND filters to allow for a longer exposure on each frame, but I digress.) Anyway, it's a good enough sequence to test out LRTimelapse. So here are the first and last stills from the sequence (resized down from original .RW2 files shot at 4608x3456):

Using Lightroom and LRTimelapse, I exported the stills and created a full frame clip in my editing software. I then cropped the clip to 1920x1080:

The whole process was pretty simple and intuitive.

I have a similar related question. I want to get a intervelometer some day but don't have time to get one before I head to my cottage and want to shoot some timelapse of sunset.

Since stills isn't an option I am looking at long records in video and sped up in post. Could anyone suggest what shutter speed would be best? I assume (I may have flawed logic) that since when I shoot slowmo viz I use a high shutter speed that timelapse video records should be a low shutter speed. Is this right? Any suggestions? I have ND filters to cut the light in order to use a low shutter speed. I was planning on just recording 24H video.

ive been playing with the timelapser patch mjeg and to me shutter speed is specific if you want that blurred night light streaking or people movement. so for a sun shot i guess you can crank that shutter pretty high to get the right exposure unless there are subjects in the shot that you want to move in a blurred motion. timelapser patch is pretty darn convenient. you just hit record, convert it with the timelapser tool on the comp and voila. you can also drop more frames during conversion if you want faster timelapse.

but for OP, if its broadcast then traditional intevoltmeter is the way to go for broadcast quality

An intervalometer is the way to go. I use several different ones with my GH2 - a PClix, an Emotimo PT pan and tilt head and a Stage Zero Dolly with MX2 controller. I'd recommend starting out with a simple controller such as the one suggested by Keylight or the PClix. It's taken me a while to understand how to get the result I want. There are many variables that will affect how a particular sequence ends up looking. Have fun with it!
