Advice for a trip to NY

Hi guys ..... few days and I will be in NY.
Any suggestion on where to go to listen some live jazz or some gospel choir ?
thx

For Jazz, go to Smalls in the Village. It's the best. But go later, you'll get more people coming in to jam sometimes.

Also Village Vanguard has a good band.

Stay away from blue note. Overpriced, overcrowded tourist trap.

Look, you can try to find outlet malls, but why? Not really a NY thing.

For clothing, try the new and small-scale designers shops in the garment district, wander around the village, especially for vintage clothing, etc. Go to the original high-class fancy places (just to look, perhaps) places - Saks 5th Ave, Tiffany's, etc. If she wants to buy fancy stuff for you, go to Barney's.

Hit the museums (and their gift shops). Hit the galleries. Hit the small clubs. Hit the off-broadway theaters. Find some freaky performance art. Make sure to walk a lot (once you're in Manhattan) rather than spend time in trains and busses - you'll always find something more interesting than what you were originally hesded for anyway. Make sure you see the East Village, West Village, Lower East Side, Chinatown, Wall Street district, Central Park south area, Upper West Side, Upper East Side at least for the Guggenheim and Met, the MOMA, spend some time in Central Park (during the day)...

For food - don't forget the street food. Don't forget cheap, good pizza slices. Don't forget Gray's Papaya. Don't forget the 2nd Ave. Deli and the Ukrainian places nearby. Find some Ethipian if you haven't tried it. In Queens (Jackson Heights) are all kinds of rare Latin American cuisines.

Make sure the hotel in Queens isn't in a double fare zone.

Watch out how you park your car....

I don't know if anybody has mentioned this - but if you want to see a broadway play, on the day of the plays in the morning, you can get what are called "rush tickets", like $15 to $20 - usually reserved for students - I was able to do that a couple of times. You just ned to go to the ticket office in the morning and see if they have any available...

Large? not really. But if you want good... BURGER.

Just got back from NYC. Tips for food:

Katz's Delicassen = amazing & famous Jewish Deli. Pastrami sandwiches are best I've had. Also where they filmed part of When Harry Met Sally

Jean George's @ International Trump Tower right by Central park (SW end) = Amazing 5 star restaurant, Jean George is a Michellen chef. If you go after 10pm on a weeknight and eat in the casual dining room (still very nice), you get the SAME FOOD, but you can get a 4 course meal for $35. I had it and it was the best food I've ever eaten in my life. And I've eaten a lot of food. Small, gourmet portions of course but very worth it.

See a Broadway play for sure! If you get tickets in Times Square after 2pm the day of, you can get tickets for 50% off at the TKTS booth. I got excellent seats (center, 6 rows from front) to see Guys & Dolls, which is one of the best plays on Broadway right now, and done in a very classical broadway style. I don't even like plays... I loved going to see this. If you go to the booth at 2pm there will be plenty of options for shows that night.

Try to see Lettermen live!

$20 to get to the top of either Empire State Building or Rockefeller Center. Empire State Building is more classically romantic... the top of the rock has a better view (not quite as tall, but almost, but it is a totally open view with nothing blocking your view up at top. Plus it is close to the empire state building, so you can actually see the empire state from a good vantage point, which is one of the coolest landmarks to look at anyway.

You could also do a liberty island/ellis island tour

St. Patrick's Cathedral near Rockefeller Center & SAKS 5th Ave (great but expensive shopping) is a great landmark

Go for a stroll through central park, it's beautiful. Dinner at the Boat House in central park, followed by a boat ride would be a great evening date.

Another good evening date = ice skating at Rockefeller Center.

It's worth the walk to walk the Brooklyn Bridge coming into Manhattan.

Check out Schwartz's, the toy store at the SE end of Central park at the plaza, they have the BIG piano there (the one you can walk on, from the Tom Hanks movie).

Have fun!!! Just BEING in New York and at Times Square is an experience in itself. Make sure to just spend some time in Times Square, its great, and the energy EVERYWHERE in the city is fantastic.
