Advice for a trip to NY

Hi guys,
got an ultra cheap deal to fly to NY and will be there in May with my gf for 1 week. Haven't been there in 20 years and I am looking forward to it. We will be staying probably in some hotel in Queens or Brooklyn but anyway between JFK and Manhattan. It will be more convenient and by subway we can get easily every day to Manhattan. We will do the usual tourist vists (museums, skycrapers, liberty statue, squares, park etc) around there. Probably a day trip to the Niagara falls too.
Any suggestion for good shopping ? Some outlets or really good stores where we could go for clothes and related ? You know girls ....
I might visit B&H too since I've never been there but bought remotely.
Maybe some hints/tips on some food during the day or something else worth watching ? Some good deal for a musical or anything you might know ?
thx cheers

I thought the same thing... take a look at google maps. The falls are touching Buffalo and Toronto... a very long way from NYC... other end of the state. They aren't much farther from ME in STL then they are from NYC. (12 hours for me by car)

As for shopping (ugh) right up from Times Square central (at 7th and Broadway)... a few blocks down, is Macy's... I think it's 20 floors or so and really cool, if you're into that kind of thing. I like the old wooden escalators.

Times Square is right on the edge of the fashion district (go south)... and then there's China Town... a ways away, but not bad by cab or subway... and you'll find plenty of crap along Canal street. If one of the chinese shop workers asks you what you want and you say something like "Coach" then they will try to lead you into a back room, which isn't that big of a deal, but I wouldn't go into a situation like that with wads of money waving about. If you want a fake Coach bag or some other FAKE stuff (sunglasses, junk cologne, etc) then this can be fun... I didn't buy anything... but if you do then plan what you'll spend and don't get caught up in it. If you pay more then $40 or so for a knock-off bag then you paid too much... but again, I consider it more of a novelty to buy some rip-off Rolex or something as a humorous gift then anything else.

From JFK, (buy a $10 Metro card for two person, monthly, weekly not excepted for air train)
Take Air Train to Howard Beach for A (If your staying in Brooklyn/Manhattan).
Or Take Air Train to Archer Av for E (If your staying in Queen/Manhattan).
check the Following link for MTA Map.

If you’re in the mood to do some shopping, my advice to you find cheapest hotel in Manhattan. Your will be near the shopping area + B and H + you can take the Greyhound bus or Amtrak to Niagara Falls, Ontario. If you're not American, you will need a passport to cross the border.

Dallas BBQ have two meal spacial for $9.99 (42nd street b/t 7th and 8th ave)
Musical: virgin megastore going out of business, 30% off on Every thing (46th and Browdway).
Stay away from Canal street (bootleggers) and any store from 26th steert to 31st on Broadway (ripoff).

thx for tips guys :)
Right ... Niagara Falls is a bit far, eheh. Only Superman used to get there fast for a day trip :)
I have been travelling around the world so I am not scared in going in some chinese market but I am not looking to buy any FAKE stuff ( i can get it in Beijing :) I am more looking into avoiding typical areas with shops which charge more for tourist. Good tips Kwan, will avoid those areas. I have been in Macy's in SF (have been in US lots of times already), I am just trying to find some store where locals could go to buy their clothes and avoid typical tourist attractions :)
About Hotel, prices in Manahttan are bit insane for me ..... but found a Ramada (in Hillside Avenue, NY 11432 Queens) which offers a nice room for 100USD (bfast included) and has excellent reviews. I would prefer to take the subway and commute every day back and forth, I am not scared of walking and taking public transportations for hours every day :)
I am from Rome (Italy), so I know what that means ;)
Great tips Kwan .... checking your URLs. THX

Found a 7-Day Unlimited Ride MetroCard: $25 (here) but probably I need to buy extra the air train fron JFK. There is no such "$10 Metro card for two person" :)
thx

Definitely hit up B&H if you've never been there, you'll like it a lot :)

Also a unlimited Metro Card is a must here as you'll be taking the subway everywhere.

I also agree about Chinatown for the food, best place to get great eats for cheap. But be prepared for the masses, it seems that every visitor on the planet is there everyday, so sometimes you can't even walk on Canal Street cause its so crowded.

ah ok ..... 10$ for 5 rides for airtrain .... then I will get 1 week pass for the Subway. On transportation I guess we are done then :) thx Kwan.
Thx Mgalvan .... will do it :)
Any tips on shopping ? Where locals go ? Do you have any outlet which are maybe not central located ? Or you all hit Macy's ? :)

If you guys need any help for trip to Rome ... just let me know :)

Canal street definitely has some cheap genuine goods as well. If you don't mind buying stuff that "fell off a truck".

As for good Broadway show prices, I believe the red TICKETS stand in the middle of TIMES SQUARE still offers good deals on last minute matinees.

Food? Well, there is good food ALL OVER the place in the city. If you are in midtown (Times Square area) Little Italy's pizza is one of my favs (on 43rd about a block and a half from Grand Central).

Otherwise, you can pretty much eenie meenie miney moe it...there are so many good joints there.

Cheap genuine goods? Like WHAT???

:)

No really... like what?

You can buy Aqua D10... Agua Digo... H2O Di Gio... Acqua Di G10... all labeled to look like Acqua Di Gio... or you can buy the real fake stuff (still fake stuff in a better counterfeited bottle (in back).

I've been in Beijing also... (recently) and it's more of the same and more of what you didn't see in Beijing... (couldn't find a Foach purse in Beijing, but plenty on Canal St.)

If you have to go in back to see the real stuff... trust me it's STILL not real.

The times square place is called TKTS. I would say you should go to South Street Seaport and go to the TKTS booth there. You can get 40 - 50% off on broadway tickets and the South Street booth has the show tickets go up the day prior. Times Square booth is day of only.

And come on, fashion capital of the US and you stop at Macy's for fashion? I'd say that is pretty lame.

I didn't say *I* went to Macy's! The guy asked about shopping in NYC. I'm not into fashion because I'm not gay (not that there's anything wrong with that).

good guys .... so "TKTS" is a sort of store where to get good deals on clothes ?
I am looking for local fashion and brands ... jeans too, sports wear, shoes etc. When I need italian lables I would go back home in Italy :)
I recall having great deals on Timberlands and Nike as well all sort of jeans :)
What about safetly of going around pretty late by sabway ? Our current pick for the hotel is in the Queens Hillside Ave neighborhood. Again I have been in all major cities around the world but alone ... this time will have my gf with me.
thx for all your great help :)

Maybe some hints/tips on some food during the day

Free Hot Dogs at Rudy's in Hell's Kitchen.
