Advertising is TOTALLY out of control!

I am SO sick of all the stupid ads on TV and radio! It is INSANE. NOTHING is what they say it is any more and things are totally out of control.

So what caused this? Is it a non-stop lobby of Congress to allow companies to make ANY degree of promise they want... regardless of the truthfulness of it?

Does anybody remember when state lotteries were brand new and the ads used to have a disclaimer at the end which clearly stated "this advertisement is for information and not intended to encourage gambling"?

Now they just say you'll probably win the lotto if you just buy a ticket! In Saint Louis we have a radio ad that has the narrator talking to a waitress... he asks her if she buys lotto tickets... she says "only when it gets over 10 million dollars" then the narrator says "why wouldn't you buy a ticket for a million dollars?" and the waitress says "hmm... I don't know." So the narrator says "I guess a million dollars wouldn't really change your life, huh?" And just then you hear her boss yelling at her to get to a table.

I mean WTF? Talk about preying on the little people.

I'm also bothered by all the XBox 360 commercials which talk about the stunning graphics and they show what looks like it COULD be the graphics of the actual gameplay. My nephew got one and it is NOTHING like they depict! I wonder how many people get sold on the images that they will never see... since it IS the best console you can get and the graphics ARE good... but c'mon! For anybody that's seen FarCry, D3, or HL2 on a 6800 or better graphics card the new XBox is a total yawn.

So what's your favorite false (or stupid) advertising?

Another one is the Seiko watch commercial where everybody explains that it isn't a certain facet of materialism that defines you... and after everybody says each thing that it's not... they all end up saying that it IS, however, your watch!

Those emails that say click here if you want a big dick....

Click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click, click,

Nothin'......

Shots of people smiling, playing tennis, jogging, repainting their living room.
A snappy jingle plays in the background.
And at the end?

"Ask your doctor is Mercovex® is right for you?"

If you're going to advertise, at least tell me what the f'ing product is for!

Hahahahahaha! That's funny.

I got a spam email once that said nearly the same thing. It for a website that was selling a lotion cream for the same purpose. They claimed that if you rubbed it on your dick your dick would get bigger. How the F could THAT be??? If you rubbed the cream on your dick, wouldn't your hands get bigger too???

OH MY GOD!!
It works!

Car commercials that show the car driving through cool looking environments dodging [iceburgs, other cars, giant books, missiles, explosions, fire etc.] performing unrealistic handling.

But I like those commercials - even if they are misleading. I love em, actually, I spend hours upon hours watching them... I love "Dance" by Mark Romanek, great car commercial...

**** I can't think right now... ok this was a stupid post, enjoy reading it

My favorite: Go to ANY fast food outlet, look at the pics on the boards, and compare them with what you get. THAT I call creative advertising.

The bastards are clearly lying, billions and billions can see it with their own eyes every freaking day (duh, look up, look down - see the difference?), and yet, they get away with it. One more proof that collectively, the human species is just a bunch of dumbasses.

There are two reasons why I don't watch TV: 99% of the content is crap (or am I so weird?), and the commercials just make me wanna kill someone. Not worth going to jail:thumbsup:

Bu I do have a large screen TV for the movies.

what you're describing is pretty much the modern world. i'm glad you've finally realized. you're a small step ahead of a lot of people

What are you talking about "finally realized"?

I've been pissed about this for years!

How about bodybuilding? I did that for 7 years and I can tell you that NOBODY gets in a magazine w/o steroids! Any guy you see in a gym that's big and cut is on juice. EVERY ONE! I'm so sick of the "I eat 10 chicken breasts a day" crap. Gimme' a break! I was there dude! THE ENTIRE TIME! God I'm so sick of the hypocritical stupidity of it all! How can the world just function day in and day out tippy-toing on lies?

Isn't anything just REAL anymore? Why does everyone have to be lied to in order to develop an interest in an idea?

I'll never make it to old age... my heart won't let me.

How about all the alcohol companies with their anti-drinking advice? I could go on about this advertising crap forever.

Cars are the worst. Especially SUVs targetted at modern day yuppies. Yeah, jump off a cliff to go to your office job every day... you parachuting dare-devil you. In reality it's some geek that won't even drive that thing on grass one time.

Hey! I like that commercial!

oh... well i thought you were talking about how our lives have basically become a commodity. ive always felt like the only reason i matter in america is because im a digit in some advertising statistic. our lives in america (and elsewhere throughout the modern world) have become a commodity. after school, i am actually looking into country co-ops and kibbutzim in israel as possible solutions to this problem.

It's the necessary evil for living in a capitalist system...
I don't want to turn this into a political discussion, but a 'free market' will pretty much always require loads of advertising....

It's like the nuclear waste of capitalism... a societal byproduct.
I guess we've gotta take the good with the bad.

Reminds me of the Churchill quote:
"Democracy is the worst form of governement, besides all the other ones."

But I agree...I"m constantly amazed as to how people find new and ingenous place to cram advertising into.
I still remember being shocked the first time I saw a commercial in the movie theater.
Then they started showing up as print ads on oversized gas handles at the pump.
ugh.

Nevermind actual 'product placement' littered throughout the movies we pay to go see.
I'd gladly pay more for a ticket to see movies without ads in them.

But, like I said...necessary evil.

It's a bunch of crap.

You can show a junky piece of plastic with cartoon fairies and birdies fluttering around a child's gaping smiley-ass face and all the little punks go "I want that toy!" 10 minutes after they open it and aren't surrounded by eternal bliss they junk it in the corner. Okay THAT I can live with... they're kids... why not blast their little hopes and dreams. (laughing)

What gets me is... say... Christmas "be charitable", and the less fortunate, etc. etc. Christmas has nothing to do with anything but "what did you get me" and I hate all the pretense that it means anything else.

My neighbor across the street has one of those air-up Santa Clauses with the "joy to the world" etc etc... This is the same guy that I'll say hi to a few times a year even though he leers back at me every time like I'm yelling Nazi taunts at him.

There's a local radio commercial about the art of giving... and the commercial is about a Rolex watch. Very next commercial is about tossing cash into the red cans of the salvation army. Hmm... crazy world isn't it.

Well as least we have P.K. to give us hope.

Hey how about the cereal boxes that say "part of a nutritious breakfast"... why not show a box of ammo sitting next to orange juice and eggs and say "part of a nutritious breakfast"? I'm looking at a bottle of nesquik that has in BIG PRINT "Builds Strong Bones!" and in TINY print "when mixed with milk"... Why not "Builds Strong Bones! And Fat Asses!"

Chocolate milk is not the road to health... sorry kids.

MattinSTL - I'll do what I can. I worked in advertising for 10 years (which explains all the annoying PMs to you all). I'll move back to the US and go undercover with the DVX100 in tow. Imagine the documentary that could be made.

Beer Commercials
What They Show - Beautiful young women playing volleyball.
The Truth - Someone slumped over a toilet promising they'll never drink again.

Excercise Equipment Commercials
What They Show - A man and woman in perfect shape.
The Truth - They had never used that product before the day of the video shoot.

1-900 Numbers
What They Show - Beautiful single women who want to talk to you.
The Truth - Chain smoking housewives trying to make an extra buck by talking very slowly to you.
