Advanced Picture Slide Show Using Avid?

I have a bunch of high-res pictures (1600x800 for example) I'd like to bring into Avid and pan and zoom around to music. When I import them into Avid, it seems like it resizes the picture to fit the screen resolution I've chosen. It doesn't allow me to only show part of the pictures in the frame and pan and zoom them using a motion path.

Because of this, I've had to bring them into an old copy of After Effects and use postition and scale key frames. It works great in After Effects, but it's so slow and I don't own the copy so I'd like to try and accomplish what I'm doing in Avid. I also want to sync the transitions to music and After Effects seems to crawl once I add an audio track with all of my large images in the project.

Any way to bring in large pictures in Avid and control their position and scale with relation to the viewable area easily?

Thanks in advance.

Ok, I read the Avid help (topic Using Avid Zoom and Pan :)) and it says to create a "placeholder segment" then apply the Zoom and Pan effect to the "placeholder segment" and THEN you can select the image you'd like to zoom and pan.

I have no idea how to create a placeholder segment and the help wasn't very helpful here. Does anyone know what I should do?

Thanks.

Ok, so I just used an image as a "segment placeholder". The problem is now how to easily change the duration of the zoomed/panned image. Can this be done while still maintaining the full motion I originally setup? For example, if I have a long image panned from bottom to top at 20 seconds, then I decide I want the full bottom-top panning to only be 10 or 15 seconds (perhaps the music calls for this at the time), how do I do that without deleting it and starting over with a different duration?

In addition, if I'm trying to dissolve two still pictures together Avid always claims there isn't enough source media to do this. In Flash or AE I easily just slowly lower the opacity on one image overlapping another for a nice still image to still image dissolve - what's the Avid equivilent?

Also, do you have Boris FX or Boris RED that shipped with your copy of Xpress Pro? It does a fantastic job of working with still images. Moving them around, dissolves, zooms, the whole nine yards.
