I'm going to be shooting in some conditions that are very bad for recording dialogue live. Is it possible to run live audio from the DVX into a computer? I'm thinking I could get some good sound using the built in mic for ADR. Any thoughts?
do you mean realtime recording into a PC right on set as you are actually recording the scene?
are you only using the wild track only as a guide or do you plan on trying to sweeten the wild track up with soem post production tricks?
if you are, i would suggest getting a more directional mic than using the on board cameras mic.
I'm actually thinking about running the DVX into the computer, playing back the footage I plan on using (which I would have shot early with no sound recording) while havinging the actor read the lines with the footage as a guide. I'm basically wondering if you can stream the audio (only) from the DVX to the computer so I can use the onboard DVX mic as an ADR mic. It just sounds better than any other mic I have when used nice and close for ADR.
Does that make any sense? Sorry, I'm having one of those days. Nothing's working right
Not exactly, but close. You can stream both audio and video via the firewire port and capture that to a hard drive while recording to tape (or bypass the tape entirely). But you need enough disk space to hold it all and appropriate software to do the capture & storage. I use DVRack from Serious Magic - you can find reviews of it here on the board with a search. Or you could use almost any one of the NLE programs to do the capture if you install them on the laptop. I capture from cam to DVRack to external USB2 disk drive, then transfer the drive to my desktop system to manipulate the files. Spinning off an audio track at that point would be trivial.
Follow Chris' suggestion if you can. FCP will let you do this, and it even has a tool specificly for it - it is located under the TOOL menu, it is called VOICE OVER. The only thing that I have to add is that you might want to consider recording the audio on location that way you will have a reference track for your talent to listen too. They will have an easier time matching their pace when doing ADR if they have a reference point.
