Re: Adobe vs Final Cut.

Walter murch, the editor of Apocalypse now, godfather, english patient, etc, decided to use Final cut pro for his last job on Cold Mountain. I guess it tells alot about how stable, powerful and versatile FCP can be. Especially considering the renowned unix platform on which Mac OS X is based.

I hate PCs anyway, they probably have the worst design ever made for an object. Square and Beige most of the time. The windows interface looks crappy, it's so not artistic in every sense of the word. Theres no way it can look interesting. I've had many stability problems in the past with Adobe Premiere on a PC (version 6 for example), and with PCs in general. The program was sometimes crashing while i was working or saving in a corrupted file so i wasn't able to open my project again. Premiere and PCs always been hell for me, except when i was running UNIX.

Re: Adobe vs Final Cut.

If the only option one had on a PC was Adobe's Premier, I would say go for FCP (as it is leagues ahead of premier), but the fact is there are many other options to consider. In a sense, your question asks whether it would be better to buy a $20 capture card for your PC or spend a few $G on a mac and accompanying software (FCP, etc.). To give a short answer to that, I would say that if you could find a viable NLE on the PC for your style of workflow, then simply buying a capture card would be more practical choice.

As for options to consider for NLEs on the PC...
1)Vegas (link) - A very capable NLE. Coming from FCP, I searched long and hard to find the best PC NLE that most matched the capability of FCP. I decided upon Vegas, and have come to find that in many ways, it surpasses FCP. Given that the latest version just came out this past monday (which added many nice features/enhancements), I would highly recommend checking out the fully functional 30-day trial.

2)Liquid Edition (link) - I have not used this NLE extensively enough to give a proper opinion of it, but many people like it.

3)Avid (link) - Used avid for many years. I found that most people said was "the best" because everyone else said it was. A couple of years ago at NAB, I asked Avid what made their NLE better than other NLEs. Their response, "the customizeable keyboard shortcuts". Pretty much all respectable NLEs have customizeable keyboard shortcuts these days. Hmmm. While this may be a good option for you, I don't care for Avid very much.

Keep in mind there are not all of the options available for PC. Also keep in mind it doesn't matter what someone else has done on a NLE (tho many use that as justification for the validity of a NLE), just as Leonardo da Vinci's paintbrush couldn't make someone without talent paint a masterpiece. It's about what you do with it.

Nonetheless, FCP is a great editor, and one of the few available for the mac. So it would be a good choice if you had a mac. However, there are many comprable (and in many ways better) NLEs available on the PC as well.

Re: Adobe vs Final Cut.

Dude Apple just came out with FCP HD, the newest version of FCP. Get a mac too. FCP HD will do wonders for you in the long run. What's even better is that if you are a student (college) you can get FCP HD for $300. Thats the student discount price. Everything is the same as the retail version the only difference is that its an educational version. Check it out at: [http://www.apple.com/finalcutpro/]
