Adobe Premiere Pro and RAW DNG files - action needed

Acording to the Adobe forums, we all need to raise a quick feature request for them to consider adding O7Q Cinema DNG file support:

http://forums.adobe.com/message/6225831#6225831

Of course, they may already have committed to doing that, although the Adobe guy talking on there didn't seem to think so. Maybe the guys at CD have already convinced them but maybe not.

So - it only takes a few moments - if you use Premiere Pro, please take a few moments to fill out the form:

https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform

For what it's worth, a nice fellow from Adobe just emailed me saying that he noticed a number of people submitting this same request and wondered if we were discussing it on a forum somewhere. I passed him the link to this thread.

And a follow up that he asked me to post:

Hi, My name is David McGavran, Senior Engineering Manager on Premiere Pro. We are working very closely with Convergent Design and the Odyssey 7Q is awesome. I will be at NAB with a bunch of others from Adobe. Come by the booth and say hi ;)

So, sounds like they're on it.

Lol people power! :) good news :)

I really do hope they add the support super-fast.

It would be super handy, even though its not normal to deliver 4K content yet. The 4K2HD has proven the high value of filming in high resolution and down sampling later in a better quality workflow.

The 4K raw CinemaDNG will be my 2 go to landscape filming mode.

Submitted: one passioned plea. :-)

Both Andy Mangrum at CD and David McGavran at Adobe have been in contact since I posted this. They both say they're working closely together to get this issue fixed, so I'm very hopeful it will be sorted. I guess there's a lot of sense in having it done for NAB too, so fingers crossed.

Thanks everyone for submitting the request. Even if they are working on it, it helps show how much we need it.

OK everyone, I know y'all have been patient with getting the new firmware and would really like to have full compatibility with Adobe.

But I have to ask you to please stop pushing Adobe on this now. It is not their "problem" that our DNG files are not currently compatible with their products. Convergent Design and Adobe have been working closely together for some time now and this situation will change, but in the meantime I need to ask you to chill about this a bit. I'm the guy who encouraged everyone to let Sony know that you wanted them to allow the 7Q to record 4K RAW. I'm also the guy who is now telling you not to bother Adobe on this question any more.

I trust you all understand that I have your best interests at heart.

What?

You said earlier in the Firmware status thread that you, CD, now had changed your DNGs so that the incompatibility issues that remains now was Adobes responsibility. What is this double communication going on?

Responsibility is a strong word. I think more correct to say that Convergent Design have done all that they can from their end, it now requires a modification from Adobe to make it work.

Everything we hear would indicate that Adobe will do what's needed, however there's certainly no responsibility on their part. It's not a bug to fix, it's a feature to add.

Mitch is in the loop, if he's suggesting that it's in our best interests to back off and patiently allow things to happen, then I suggest we do exactly that.

I see it differently, since i am actually paying for a product designed to edit professional footage. I dont think Adobe should add the feature out of goodwill. They have to, if they dont want to loose subscribers.

I dont think Mitch is wrong when he tells us to back down. The communications from february and the new information coming now just has me very confused, thats all.

Thanks for the reply to this Mitch. There's obviously something going on behind the scenes from the tone of your request and I kind of get the feeling I have to defend my position in asking people to file feature requests. As far as I was aware, the requests and discussions were being conducted in a professional and friendly way too.

I started this thread and encouraged people to file feature requests as I was under the impression from both Mitch and the Adobe employee on the Adobe forum post I linked too that the ball was in Adobe's court to get this working. Maybe that's not exactly the case or the situation has changed and now CD have to make further changes to the DNG file structure?

From my last 10+ years participating in the various Adobe forums and from conversations with various Adobe employees, blog posts etc - the stock answer and encouragement has always been to file feature requests so Adobe can judge what their users are most requesting. Even if those requests are obvious or relate to work that has already been committed too, they're seen as very valid. Sure it's only one method of feedback but it's actively encouraged by all. I'm sure the guys at Adobe wouldn't want to discourage that feedback that they've spent many years fostering.

I really don't see how logging feature requests could cause a problem? Particularly as the Adobe employee (Kevin) on the Adobe forum suggested to do exactly that. He was obviously not in the loop with the work you've been doing with Adobe but I still fail to see how logging feature requests could cause any kind of problem unless I've got it all wrong?

That being said, I get the message - it's being worked on and I strongly trust Mitch and all the guys at CD to get this sorted and make the O7Q an even more useable device. It truly is an excellent bit if kit :)

Paul.

Hi Guys,

Finally got approved to post here ;) No stress on the feature requests. We love to hear from all of you. Please note we can't talk about unreleased features, etc. Just one of those things. We are working closely with Convergent Designs as we have said and think it is a great product. So just hang tight for a bit. We do appreciate the interested in Premiere Pro CC and hope you are all enjoying your 7Q. Again come by and say hi at NAB if you make it there. Crazy enough it is only like 2.5 weeks away!

Cheers

Dave
Senior Engineering Manager, Premiere Pro CC

Thanks Dave :)

Good to hear you're working with CD - both Premiere Pro and the O7Q are excellent ptoducts. Been using Premiere since 1994 I think it was - 4.0. !

I look forward to seeing what you have to show at NAB - not in person unfortunately but will be eagerly watching the press releases and show info / interviews.

Cheers,

Paul.
