Adobe Premiere GH1 Workflow Issues

I'm attempting to import 720 60 AVCHD footage into Premiere CS4 / CS5. I'm a Premiere noob.

I'm selecting the AVCHD 60 preset for my timeline. I import my footage directly off of the GH1 using "Import". I can drag the footage into my timeline, but it will not playback smoothly / at all. I can see still frames fine, but it won't play more than a few seconds before stopping.

Here is my computer setup:

Macbook 2.4 ghz Core 2 Duo
4GB of Ram
Adobe Premiere CS4 / CS5 (I've tried both versions)

I'm not sure if this is a settings issue or if my computer is just too slow. Should I try converting my footage to another format before importing?

You will most likely have stuttering preview in CS4 unless you've used cineform or the like to convert your AVCHD footage. You can edit native files in CS5 and should not experience any stuttering at all with proper PC sizing. Without knowing anything about the footage your working with, it would be hard to tell whats going on, but try 1/2 or 1/4 resolution in playback in CS5 to see if you can narrow down the possibilities. If it rolls just fine in CS5 at 1/2 or 1/4 resolution then there is some degree of probability your system is not tweaked to run with CS5.

First, try copying the files to your hard drive before importing them into Premiere. I'm not sure about Macs, but the 4GB might also be a limitation like it would be on a PC.

Your computer isn't powerful enough for RT playback in Premiere.. In CS5 I couldn't get good RT playback on my overclocked i7 920 @3.2GHZ with 12 GB ram at full rez full frame until I upgraded my video card to a GTX260 and used the hack to get it recognized as a supported GPU for the Mercury engine. Only now does it show a yellow line with GH1 footage and play back smoothly.

BTW.. You should also set your project to 23.97 progressive. You can still shoot and edit the 60P footage, but with no viable output medium for 60P 23.97 would be a better choice. Plus you can right-click the clip > Modify> Interpret footage> assume this frame rate then change it to 23.97 and tada... smooth slowmo on the timeline.

The specs of my laptop are 2.4GHZ, 4 gigs of RAM and an ATI graphics card.

I can edit the GH1's AVCHD files on Premiere CS5 without any issues at all and I've done it mixed with HDV or DVCPRO HD files for music videos.

Having a very powerful computer helps a lot but sometimes their are other factors at play to prevent smooth playback. The TM700 is a perfect example in which some of the more powerful computers were struggling more so than less powerful computers to playback 1080 50p and 60p files. After some adjustments, some finally got the footage to playback smoothly.

With all that said, My computer is Windows based unlike yours.

I'm considering getting rid of my GH1 because I cannot successfully edit any of these videos. It's extremely frustrating. Is there any format I could convert it to prior to editing to make the playback smoother? Or do I just need a new machine?

Use a 720 30p sequence - cs4 and cs5 have no framerate settings for the entire project - its all in the sequence settings - so you can try multiple settings withing one project.

my dual core 1.5 laptop with 4 gigs would play it back fine with cs 4.2 for about 10 seconds before starting to stutter. my i7 720 with 4 gigs will play it fine with no stutter even with effects applied on 1080 footage.

4 gigs is plenty, just make sure you have all oither apps closed.

my guess is that it is the 60p settings you used. i shoot a lot of 60p - where this comes in to play is when you slow your footage down. if you drop 60p footage into a 30p timelines in cs 4.2 or 5, it should play just fine. right click on the clip in the timelines and adjust speed/duration to 50%. should still play fine and when you advance frame by frame you should still see 30 unique frames per second with no frame blending.
