Adjusting Audio Volume

I am going to work with the HVX to shoot video in 720i and edit in Final Cut Pro to do some instructional videos.

1. Will a lav connected straight into the HVX be sufficient or should I use a mixer?
2. How do you configure the audio on the HVX to average around -12db?

Thanks.

That will work fine just use your levels and get the best sound using the input adjusters under the viewfinder. If your only using one mic duplicate the audio by putting channel 1 and 2 on input 2, this will create two tracks from the same signal. I wouldn't try to hit -12db in camera, get the loudest, cleanest, non peaking audio you can and adjust the levels in post so you have all your options open.
And I assume you mean 720 "p" so shoot in 24pn.
