Adjusting Audio Levels

I have a boom mic connected directly to the HVX. I am using headphones to monitor the sounds.

1. How do you determine what the audio levels should be? Based on what is coming from the boom, I can not really tell how it is going to sound when played back on DV tape/P2.

2. It seemed that there was a slight hissing in the background. I have no idea what was causing this. How can this be eliminated or reduced?

your headphones could be causing hiss. i usually keep my levels peaking at most 1 into red, but ideally one above the 2nd bar.

You could "contain" your audio dynamic range with proper tool:

Sorry...I'm not understanding the link. What is the "proper tool?"
